Obama and Wright: On Being On, Off, and Under the Bus

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

However tentative, progress is being made on the oft-stalled Obama-Wright front. According to the NY Times' politics blog, The Caucus, "Voices around the blogosphere say they’re tired of the media kerfuffle surrounding" the issue; but more hopeful than that, I found, was that "they also say they’re sick of the expression 'thrown under the bus.'"

The bad news, on both counts, is that "they certainly keep writing about it," and, even worse, "they keep using" the expression.

Every political crisis seems to bring with it a phrase that won't die. I recall that during the untidy unpleasantness of President Clinton's impeachment, every network pundit, every bloody night, would either confirm or deny that the president's sins had "risen to the level" of Congressional correction. Once the phrase poked its banal nose under the tent, it moved in whole hog and soon became the only way that virtual armies of commentators were able to frame the debate. Only the U.S. Senate's vote of acquittal finally, mercifully put it to rest.

As for being "thrown under the bus," I don't recall its first application to the Obama-Wright "kerfuffle," but with astounding immediacy it stalked us with the same insidious persistence of last decade's dreadful verbal obsession. Its usage came early and in swarms: I do recall that.

Obama, to the delight of some and sorrow of others, had not thrown Wright under a bus in Philadelphia. Days of debate ensued as to whether he should have. Weeks later, Wright got off the bus and Obama promptly commenced heaving him under it, and no one was happier about that than all the network commentators, and not a few in print, who just as promptly redeployed the tired old phrase ad nauseam, ad infinitum, and with gleeful argumentum ad populum.

Its closest but rather pale competitor has been whether Obama would "roll up his sleeves" in executing the act of throwing Wright under the bus. It seems that's all that was required, all along. Obama simply needed to roll up said sleeves and do what a man needs to do. As long as he stood stubbornly unfurled, all was lost. He just didn't "get it": that no political or national progress is possible until one bares one's forearms.

Well, he did. And after weeks of telling Obama that this was the only way out, conservative voices are now taking him to task. Wrote one online scribbler from the right, via the Caucus: "Now that his campaign is getting hurt he throws his mentor under the bus as he did his grandma. What other way can you see it other then [sic] that?"

Let's see, other than that, one would first have to correct all that "mentor" business, and then conclude that Obama indeed rebuffed Wright, or dismissed him, or disowned him, or distanced himself from him -- but, for heaven's sake and the sake of our overtaxed ears and eyes, no hurling near public transportation was executed or witnessed. If that's as original as one's writing can be, there's legitimate question about the usefulness of the views behind it.

And then we have the lovable Michelle Malkin, who rather breathlessly if not cluelessly demanded: "Why the change in tone between now and yesterday?" She then answered herself: "It wasn’t the fact that Wright has been spewing this same recycled crap for years that finally got Obama mad. It was that he finally realized it was hurting his campaign. And he was personally miffed by Wright’s insults against him."

Uh, yeah? And? Your point being? It appears that it was Obama's job for 20 twenty long years to monitor the every utterance of the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. and regularly cast public judgment and profound indignation on them. (John McCain has received a right-wing exemption with respect to his Rev. Hagee duties.) Having failed to do this, Obama was then to silently suffer "insults against him," which of course the right, and others, had labeled as a sure sign of his "pansiness" -- of a man who refuses to roll up his sleeves and throw Wright under the bus, as any real man would.

But so much for the conservative bloggers, as quoted by the Times' Caucus. Let us move on with haste to the too-hasty words of a "liberal" pen:

First is Obama’s statement that he guesses he didn’t know Wright as well as he thought he did. "The person that I saw yesterday was not the person that I had come to know over 20 years." That’s a big problem for someone running on judgment.

Secondly, yesterday Obama pointed to Wright’s off-message press tour as proof that the his [sic] campaign was not managing or coordinating with Wright, I suppose to distance himself from Wright prove to people [sic] that he is indeed Obama’s former pastor. What is [sic] does for me is call into question his fitness to run a general.

It seems to me there are problems, and there are big problems, and then even bigger problems in the course of someone's "running on judgment." And the reevaluation of one's pastor is not among them -- or, to put it more appropriately, should most decidedly not be.

May I suggest to this liberal gentleman, however, a truly authentic problem or two when it comes to making a good show of exercising sound judgment. One might be, say, voting for an unprovoked war; another might be the dishonest recall of peaceful battlefield conditions. Now those are more than mere problems; they are big, indeed downright mammoth ones.

When pondering the Obama-Wright flap, perhaps the reacquisition of a little perspective is in order.

I will give the apostate liberal some credit, though, for at least not accusing Barack Obama of having thrown Jeremiah Wright under the bus. But now that he has, could we please just roll up our sleeves on get on with some other earthshattering amusement?

At least Obama doesn't have

At least Obama doesn't have to put a lot of effort into these matters; he just tells the honest truth. It's so much easier that way, for him and, if we recognize simple honesty, for us. But that precondition is hard to come by.

What it's all about!!!

It's not about Obama conveniently ending his long relationship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright and that ends it and Jeremiah Wright is a bad man and racist and how could he? It's all about Barack Obama how after 20 years of having a close relationship with Pastor Wright appears to have a dual personality - one of which is a dark hidden side with racial confusion and the convenient use of disposable people. Obama - remember chose Jeremiah Wright and his church. Jeremiah Wright had very little to do with it except to just accept Barack Obama's friendship and now come to find out - hidden agenda. It is an extreme stretch of anyone's imagination that this Obama - Wright relationship of convenience is all a complete surprise to Obama after 20 years of spiritual mentoring by Wright and Obama naming a book after a close friendship with Jeremiah Wright. This is all about saving Barack Obama's presidential campaign after the public scrutiny does NOT like what it sees in the Obama racial controversy. This could set back civil rights 40+ years. This is NOT something to be ignored and just explain it away with another grandiose Obama public lecture/speech!!! This candidate Obama comes highly manufactured and repeatedly groomed after more numerous focus group encounters and fine-tuning than half a dozen candidates combined. Obama may be the most highly tuned candidate, as the result of many, many focus groups - of our time. Obama "SLICK" is the quintessential political consultants dream robo-candidate that is intentionally designed to mislead the public.and he is!! http://thejunction.net/justfacts/2008/04/28/jeremiah-wright-demands-race-privilege-central-obama-campaign-issues/ NO one - I am convinced can have it both ways. The real discussion should now focus on whether Obama should drop out of the race altogether. This is not Presidental and what the American People deserve or need right now. This Obama racial controversy could set back civil rights 40+ years. This is NOT something to be ignored and just explain it away with a public lecture/speech !!! Obama had it for twenty years HIS WAY with the racist Wright - now he wants us to completely disregard that - it was different - it didn't happen - we don't understand - we are taking it out of context - we need to move on - it's not important. But it is very important. It is outrageous!!!! The American People deserve to know exactly what we are getting into with any Presidential candidate and most rational people I know do NOT like what they see NOW in the Obama - Wright relationship of convenience. When Michelle Obama wants to move on - that is an indication that they are into campaign damage control and no more and the race for President over-rules personal privacy and ANY relationship of convenience such as Obama- Wright. Obama is too radical and NOT Presidential - and this comes from a Democrat. The remaining Democratic primary voters and super delegates can/should act wisely and DENY Obama the White House!

thank you to: vvvc1

re the Rev. Wright endless-media frenzy: Let's keep it simple... Thank you, vvvc1, for saying what I've been waiting for the MSM to say...well for what feels like forever! I noticed several of them who openly profess to be Catholics, being especially critical, first totally ignoring that they remain Catholic after the horrific pedophilia of the Catholic clergy and second, having been raised in but free from that religion myself, suspect that they think all religions require members to show up in church once a week or suffer the fires of hell for all eternity. Thus, they can't begin to comprehend how Obama may actually not have been perched in a pew at Trinity every Sunday for the past 20 years. This of course does not keep them from their 'unbiased' viewpoints on 1) the 'importance'/'father figure' of Rev. Wright in Sen. Obama's life 2)how many of their viewers/readers/listeners actually care (or do NOT)about the church attendance record of presidential candidates. In a land supposedly based on freedom of/from religion, it never ceases to amaze me that no one dare ever risk not appearing to be deeply religious if they are to run for president...what ever happened to that part of our rights? All the while the MSM run like headless chickens from one 'scandal' topic concerning Sen. Obama to the next, the world goes on...the dead keep piling up in Iraq...people keep trying to figure out how to make it to the next payday and the other candidates waltz away unexamined. Finally, while I'm on a roll, I keep wondering what that percentage of Americans still holding a death grip on the foundations of racism would think if Sen. Obama, a black man, came out with full-blown attacks on his white female competitor...seems to be a taboo with historic horrific ramifications. I for one am looking forward to a thoughtful, intelligent leader who is not running for 'Bad Comedian-in-Chief'...someone who can grasp the daunting tasks that lay ahead, think things through, be willing to listen to all sides and make an honest effort to finally try to get America out of the hole we've been dug into.

it's all theater

Wright has a book coming out, doesn't he? Wright canceled an appearance in Florida, turning the issue into a media blast over security. There were no security concerns that the State, County, and City Police were not ready for. Wright wanted the media attention. According to Locals, Wright's message hasn't changed from the last time he was speaking in Florida, so for Obama to claim he never heard, or wasn't privy too, the rhetoric of Rev. Wright is disingenuous at best. Wright has been making these comments for some time. Obama is not being Honest on this issue. Much of what Rev. Wright says is an honest interpretation of his experiences as a Black Man. For Obama to discount his observations and message now can only be seen as a passion play. The appearances of Wright in the past week was a theater production for the benefit of removing the issue from the Republicans in the fall and preventing an October Surprise. Old News come November…..next.

Some things are hard to imagine.

I can't imagine that Barack and his staff haven't trial balloned responses for the inevitable spin they must have seen coming regarding "the Rev" and his antics. If they hadn't...well their whole campaign is a tribute to intelligence, they couldn't have missed this one. But Barack may have attended a lot less than a 'regular' member of the congregation, especially over the past 10 years. His senatorial duties required that he live in Springfield, IL and WA DC for at least 50% of the time since the late 1990s. So like most 'normal' church members, he likely missed a few sermons when he was home in Chicago. So it's likely that Wright's church was simply a church base for Obama, but not one he knew as well as imagined by the pundits. The primaries in NC and IN will likely tell the story on Wright. If Hillary wins IN and/or really comes close in NC, then she will continue to highlight the story and continue our long, painful march to Denver. I'm reminded of that famous painting of Napoleon returning to Paris with his tattered troops through the driving Russian snow after his fruitless endeavor outside Moscow.

a good point Will B

but the problem is that most of what rev. Wright is saying has some elements of truth to them. Most thinking Americans have had these conversations among family and friends. We have terrorized others from the sky, we have experimented on minorities. We have built an empire on slavery and cheap labor. Blacks are different if they have been isolated in welfare blocks. on and on and on....Obama knows that some Americans agree with Wright on many points, I know I do, so I see the need for theater by the Obamacs because they suspect that most will be offended when in fact many are relieved. Now I question Obama's honesty.....you know the values his wife likes to throw in the air? Granted these issue don't need to be hashed over in an election campaign, but I would hope in my lifetime that Manifest Destiny, the root of our evil, is exposed for what it truly is, here in the states or around the world.

Proposal

Let's make 2008 a 'Preacher-Free Zone'...I thing they've done enough damage to our democracy already.

re the Rev. Wright endless-media frenzy: Let's keep it simple...

Let's keep this simple, PM: #1. American Jews have every right to remember the systematic, government funded genocide (what Prof. R. Rummell calls "democide") in Germany 45 years ago... but if an Black American brings up similar issues in America' past, he must be shouted off the stage?

#2. Every year at Passover, America's Jewish families remember and memorialize the slavery their race was held in, and the flight to freedom - 2,700 years ago. But a Black man in America will be sneered at and derided by the American corporate media for bringing up America's own legacy of cruel, brutal (often sadistic) slavery and lynch-mob segregation from just 145 years ago?

#3. Rev. Wright's "no, no, God DAMN America if we kill people without an honest accounting for why" (as precisely happened in Vietnam, with 58,000 American KIA, after we first sided with the French colonial occupation of Vietnam... the very colonial French authorities who had sided with the Japanese genocidal occupation of Vietnam during WWII) MUST be played on endless media loop - while "conservative" preachers Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and John Hagee have all get a free pass for at one time or another declaring that "GOD DAMNED AMERICA" for this sin or that sin?

- (Fallwell implied that (paraphrase) "God DAMNED America" when (direct quote) "HE LIFTED HIS VEIL OF PROTECTION" on 9-11, allowing the terrorists to kill 3,000 Americans.

-Pat Robertson echoed this "God DAMN a slice of America!" sentiment, PRAYING for God to send a KILLER HURRICANE to wipe out Orlando, as punishment or _DAMNATION_ for Disney World Hosting Gay Pride week.

- And John McCain ally Rev. John Hagee recently echoed Robertson's "HURRICANE AS GOD'S DAMNATION ON AMERICA" sentiment by stating that New Orleans had seen the devastation of hurricane Katrina flooding as a damnation from God, again over a gay pride event.)

#4. Rev. Wright's comments are... more important to the American political process than.. Catholic Church officials HARBORING, ENABLING, and AIDING and ABETTING the SERIAL RAPE of children... over the course of several decades? WHERE are the HOUSEHOLD NAMES of those Catholic Church officials who SHUFFLED RAPIST PRIESTS from one parish to another, to help those priests DODGE CRIMINAL ARREST?

#5. We know Rev. Wright's face and words - but NOT the name of ONE Fundamentalist Mormon Church man who FATHERED CHILDREN by 15 year old or younger girls? #6. Speaking of kooky Reverands, why does the Bush family get a FREE PASS for THEIR close associations with... Rev. Sung Yung Moon, who claims to be the King of America among other temporal and divine positions?

#7. and, oh yeah, President Bush nominates a SHOW HORSE association lawyer to be.. the chief of the nation's multi-billion dollar life-and-death DISASTER RELIEF AGENCY (FEMA) - under whose tender mercies (of the president) the City of New Orleans population goes from 1 million before Hurricane Katrina to 200,000 today - and we are talking about Rev. Wright's COMMENTS?? http://counterpunch.com/ross04302008.html

So let me get this straight: According to Rev. Wright critics and the "major media" WRIGHT's _COMMENTS_, alone, are FAR MORE IMPORTANT to America's voters than ALL the above? Including the CRIMES of raping children in serial and chronic abuse over the course of many years, or stacking America's disaster relief agency with incompetent, party hacks?

MSM(Corporate America)Doesn't Want Any Democrat

Look back at the last two-elections and you'll see the MSM doing its damnest to destroy Gore and Kerry. Why? Because Democrats are less corrupt than the Republicans, who have simply become Fascists, as have Bush/Cheney. The shredding of our Constitution will continue under McCain. He would appoint more Fascists on the Supreme Court. To see how well that works, check-out December 2000. That's when the 5-robed Fascists in Washington overthrew the Gore/Bush election. I use the word "Fascist" with full knowledge of what it means. Hitler and Musollini would understand all that is happening in America now.

McCain and Clinton are the real lunatic clowns

The corporate media seems determined to portray Reverend Wright as a lunatic clown and to sink Obama through that connection. What really disturbs me is the ample evidence that is intentionally ignored that McCain and Clinton are actual lunatic clowns. Both engage in extremely insulting and simplistic pandering, the latest example being the ill-considered gas tax holiday during the Summer, and both have shown a certain recklessless and callousness with regard to foreign policy, e.g. McCain's "bomb Iran" song and Clinton's "obliterate" comment. And both have been twisted by years of painful experiences that leave them with terrible tempers and a loose hold on reality. Obama is the last serious contender standing, and if the corporate media persists in its silly games, we could end up with a madman as president who really could start WWIII. I do not think that is in anyone's interests, not even Hagee's.

Obama likes extremely insulting pandering, too, apparently ...

So Clinton is engaging in "extremely insulting and simplistic pandering, the latest example being the ill-considered gas tax holiday." Good thing Obama is a new kind of politician who above that kind of thing. Except ...

Turns out that, as a state senator in an election year, Obama voted three times for a gas tax holiday in Illinois http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080430/ap_on_el_pr/obama_gas_tax_fact_check;_ylt=AjGJglSPqBIaVXJG_II50sqs0NUE . Heck, he even joked that he wanted signs on gas pumps telling motorists that he was responsible for lowering prices (signs were posted crediting the Illinois General Assembly). Of course, that was then, this is now.

Watch yourself up on that high horse ....... it's easy to fall off.

McCain Y(es)man spreads manure on Obama to distract that...

John McCain is a Crook ...In early 1987, at the beginning of his first Senate term, McCain attended two meetings with federal banking regulators to discuss an investigation into Lincoln Savings and Loan, an Irvine, Calif., thrift owned by Arizona developer Charles Keating. Federal auditors were investigating Keating's banking practices, and Keating, fearful that the government would seize his S&L, sought intervention from a number of U.S. senators. At Keating's behest, four senators--McCain and Democrats Dennis DeConcini of Arizona, Alan Cranston of California, and John Glenn of Ohio--met with Ed Gray, chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, on April 2. Those four senators and Sen. Don Riegle, D-Mich., attended a second meeting at Keating's behest on April 9 with bank regulators in San Francisco. Regulators did not seize Lincoln Savings and Loan until two years later. The Lincoln bailout cost taxpayers $2.6 billion, making it the biggest of the S&L scandals. In addition, 17,000 Lincoln investors lost $190 million. In November 1990, the Senate Ethics Committee launched an investigation into the meetings between the senators and the regulators. McCain, Cranston, DeConcini, Glenn, and Riegle became known as the Keating Five. (Keating himself was convicted in January 1993 of 73 counts of wire and bankruptcy fraud and served more than four years in prison before his conviction was overturned. Last year, he pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud and was sentenced to time served.) McCain defended his attendance at the meetings by saying Keating was a constituent and that Keating's development company, American Continental Corporation, was a major Arizona employer. McCain said he wanted to know only whether Keating was being treated fairly and that he had not tried to influence the regulators. At the second meeting, McCain told the regulators, "I wouldn't want any special favors for them," and "I don't want any part of our conversation to be improper." But Keating was more than a constituent to McCain--he was a longtime friend and associate. McCain met Keating in 1981 at a Navy League dinner in Arizona where McCain was the speaker. Keating was a former naval aviator himself, and the two men became friends. Keating raised money for McCain's two congressional campaigns in 1982 and 1984, and for McCain's 1986 Senate bid. By 1987, McCain campaigns had received $112,000 from Keating, his relatives, and his employees--the most received by any of the Keating Five. (Keating raised a total of $300,000 for the five senators.) After McCain's election to the House in 1982, he and his family made at least nine trips at Keating's expense, three of which were to Keating's Bahamas retreat. McCain did not disclose the trips (as he was required to under House rules) until the scandal broke in 1989. At that point, he paid Keating $13,433 for the flights. And in April 1986, one year before the meeting with the regulators, McCain's wife, Cindy, and her father invested $359,100 in a Keating strip mall. The Senate Ethics Committee probe of the Keating Five began in November 1990, and committee Special Counsel Robert Bennett recommended that McCain and Glenn be dropped from the investigation. They were not. McCain believes Democrats on the committee blocked Bennett's recommendation because he was the lone Keating Five Republican. In February 1991, the Senate Ethics Committee found McCain and Glenn to be the least blameworthy of the five senators. (McCain and Glenn attended the meetings but did nothing else to influence the regulators.) McCain was guilty of nothing more than "poor judgment," the committee said, and declared his actions were not "improper nor attended with gross negligence." McCain considered the committee's judgment to be "full exoneration," and he contributed $112,000 (the amount raised for him by Keating) to the U.S. Treasury. http://www.slate.com/id/1004633/

Hey Norm ...

I agree wholeheartedly! McCain IS a crook! He should have gone to jail for his role in the Keating Five! ......... feel, better now? Now ......... care to explain how this is relevant to the subject? No? ................... Didn't think so.

Guess it's obvious who's trying to distract, huh, Norm?

BTW - You never explained what happened to your famous byline .... You know .... "Hillary sucks worse than Monica. Just ask Bill." Did you get bored with it, or have you finally hit mental puberty?

Obama-Wright

The most glaring fact in this whole business is that the media are manipulating the process, they are participants in the debate rather than observers and recorders of it. They are trying to drag Obama down now. They tried to drag Hillary down when she was the front-runner. The 24/7 cable outlets have far too much time to fill and too much concern about ratings. It is time for them to present the facts and let the public decide who they want.

OBAMA REALITY CHECK?

" First is Obama’s statement that he guesses he didn’t know Wright as well as he thought he did.

What is [sic] does for me is call into question his fitness to run a general."

I still am trying to understanding how he managed to attend that church for over 20 years and never heard the anti-American ranting and raving from his spiritual mentor. I thought he said in March that he could never disown Rev. Wright anymore more than he could disown his white grandmother. Is disowning and distancing sort of like the same thing? Well, I guess things change when you start slipping in the polls. Someone made a comment at the CNN site that "if Obama's polling went down another 5 points, he'd probably distance himself from Michelle."

Think about it.

What makes you think Wright's been making those statements for 20 years? I said something yesterday I've never said before. Didn't you? And what's so terrible anyway, about saying "god damn America?" Does everyone have to be a jingoistic nationalist? Wright has really good reasons for saying what he did, and I had no problem with it the first time I saw it. I'm astounded that anyone not on the loony right would complain.

this weks episode of how to turn the world

This issue has been in the Chicago media for some time and dealing with it has been a plan all along. ............ If you look closely at the time line you will see how it was choreographed. The leaked movie exurbs, the speech on race (applauded) the absence of Wright from the country, Wright's cancelled speaking engagements, security concerns resolved by using the Black Muslim Body Guards often seen in San Francisco marching down the Height Asbury district, appearances on Public Television, crowd pleasing rhetoric at the NAACP meeting, and the final act of going over the TOP at the Press Club, putting into question his own competence and senility. Now the media can question his intensions, is he in fact a friend or foe? The plot thickens and we could be left with the impression of a poor old man going though the changes of life…but only if you concluded that this is a New mental state and not a production to put this Old Issue behind the Obama candidacy.

Let's talk about Hillary's trial deferred...

You're absolutely correct...this is a nonissue. However, a real issue is a story that broke 3 days ago and none in the media are talking about it, including BuzzFlash, unless I missed it. If Clinton is bogged down in court with a fraud charge at the start of her presidency - if elected - when would she have time to answer the 3A call or handle her duties?

Breaking News! : Hillary Clinton Required to Testify in Nove http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Breaking_News_Hillary_Clinton_Required_to_Testify_in_Nove

I am so tired of the ridiculous hurdles Obama must go through, while the real criminals aren't challenged by the media.

Yes, indeed ... Let's talk about "Hillary's trial"

You know what people should be tired of? Tired, recycled, baseless accusations against any Dems, including the Clintons. Now, I'm sure you didn't mean to mislead anyone by calling it "Hillary's trial" or "if Clinton is bogged down in court with a fraud charge at the start of her presidency," or "while the real criminals aren't challenged by the media," but I'll lay out the facts to remove any confusion.

1) This is not "Hillary's trial" - Hillary was dismissed from this suit by motion back in January of this year. http://appellatecases.courtinfo.ca.gov/search/case/mainCaseScreen.cfm?dist=0&doc_id=502016&doc_no=S158475 The suit was filed by Peter Paul, a man previously convicted of numerous felonies and promoter of numerous conspiracy theories. Google him - zero credibility. He is being represented by the United States Justice Foundation, a conservative attack group. USJF is behind the Hillary Clinton Accountability Project (HillCAP). The HillCAP Web site is operated by two conservatives who were instrumental in the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth site in 2004, Robert Hahn and Scott Swett. Lucianne Goldberg is back, too. But if they're attacking Hillary now, I guess that's okay.

2) This is not a criminal trial, it's civil, so I'm sure you didn't mean to suggest that this trial is evidence that Hillary was one of the "real criminals" that aren't challenged by the media. In fact, there are no criminal charges pending, and the California SC affirmed the dismissal of all civil charges against Hillary back in January, 2008. As to the remaining defendants, including Bill Clinton, what's left of the suit largely has to do with the alleged wooing of Paul's Japanese business investor into a separate partnership. Hillary MAY be called as a witness, but that's hardly "bogged down in court with a fraud charge."

3) The Justice Department already investigated this matter. They originally indicted David Rosen, the Clinton campaign's finance director, alleging he caused false reports to be filed with the Federal Election Commission, putting the cost of the gala at about $519,000, when Paul claimed to have spent $1.9 million to produce it. But the jury acquitted Rosen. His lawyers argued, among other things, that he had no motive to underreport the expenses, because the amount cleared by the Clinton campaign was unaffected by how much Paul spent. There were no other indictments.

Meanwhile, the FEC, mounting its own enforcement action in connection with the gala triggered by a complaint by Paul, couldn't find much to go after, either. It reached a conciliation agreement with New York Senate 2000 and its treasurer, Andrew Grossman, in December 2005. The settlement involved a payment to the FEC of $35,000 and required New York Senate 2000 to amend its disclosure report to reflect an additional $721,895 in in-kind contributions, bringing the total to $1.24 million. As to Hillary Clinton specifically, the agency voted 5-0 on a motion to "[f]ind no reason to believe that Hillary Rodham Clinton violated any provision of the [Federal Election Campaign] Act or regulations in connection with this matter and close the file as to her." Two of the votes were from Republicans and three from Democrats.

See here for more details http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/crooked_claims_about_clinton.html

But hey .................. why let the facts get in the way of a chance to trash the Clintons?

Good for you, YMan....

It's amazing, whenever Omana has to do a little "backtracking" or get's caught with a memory lapse, Buzzflash and it's corp of bloggers, immediately comes to his rescue, with, "we don't want to hear this crap, the American people want to hear about the issues"...But let Hillary make a gaff, and Buzzflash has an insatiable appetite to report it forever..And they can't figure out why their behind in donations...

Let me clear this up for you.

Mrs. Bill Clintons "gaffes" are about her serial lying or policy position flip-flops or excuses.. What her pastor said or her private chef served is of no consequence to the American people. But what she says about factual events or her positions are the only thing that matters. Since these "gaffes" put her at odds with the true left she gets slammed. As she should. As soon as Obama lies about facts, or takes a position that makes me want to puke I will slam him. Promise.

A Little More Clarity ...

... would be helpful. It seems like the standard you're laying out is that Hillary Clinton should only be slammed for "gaffes" about "what she says about factual events or her positions." Do you mean ALL factual events, or only those relevant to her policy positions? I assume you mean all facts, since you've previously criticized her for her Bosnia comments (not a policy position), and even for things which were not "gaffes" (Macedonia, Northern Ireland).

BTW - The same standard would apply to Obama, right? If you're going to "slam" Obama for "gaffes" about all facts, get ready to do some slammin'! His list may be shorter than some (since he's only been in the national spotlight for a short time), but like every other pol, he has a bunch of 'em.

Much Ado About Nothing

I am so tired of the whole Rev. Wright nonsense, I turned off the Daily Show last night as soon as the subject came up. It's absurd non-news. Of course every candidate has backers, associates, and acquaintances who say or do things the candidate does not agree with or endorse.

The focus of the corporate media on Rev. Wright is akin to the swiftboating of Kerry in the last election or the neverending coverage of Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky. There are so many really important issues, such as the lies that took us into Iraq, the economy, health care (or the lack thereof for millions of Americans), and the energy crisis.

I don't think McCain's association with Hagee should be any more of an issue than Obama's with Wright, but obviously there's a huge double standard here. I once read that the difference between Democrats and Republicans is that Democrats don't know how to go for the jugular. The rightwing noise machine just never, ever, ever shuts off, and the demonizing of Democratic candidates will continue until people truly begin to see it for what it is - a well organized (and so far highly successful) attempt to maintain corporate power through deceipt, smear campaigns, and taking advantage of established bigotry.

It's ugly, but it works far too well.

You're kidding.

To compare Wright with Hagee is astounding. Wright has legitimate complaints about America and the way black people are treated. Hagee hates substantial portions of the population as individuals for purely personal reasons.

Re Hagee

Many of Wright's comments are quite sound. Others reflect the lingering distrust and cynicism of an older black generation who experienced an America Anglos have never and will never know. Unfortunately, both are mixed up in a man who has discovered his ego and found it good. The bottom line on Wright, however, is that he's as relevant as the MSM wants him to be. Other than that, his importance is negligible other than as a barometer of a certain black demographic the extent of which I couldn't say.

John Hagee is of another order altogether. He is beloved of, and represents the sentiments of, a good portion of the Republican Party's extreme right-wing religious base. He has a nation wide organization with personal ties to the Bush Administration. His lobbying is suspected to have encouraged the Administration to drag its feet while Israel was busy killing innocent people and bombing Beirut back to the 1980's. This man's agenda includes an unshakable belief in his own interpretation of the Book of Revelations which includes war with Iran and Russia as part of the road to Armageddon.

A sane society would consider him a dangerous madman.

Odds are, Wright will fade into the background as his use to certain vested interests wears out. Hagee will continue to tool along just below the surface, pushing an agenda more dangerous than Hitler's.

Hitler's goal was domination. Hagee's goal is The End of the World.

That Wright is getting all this attention and Hagee none at all (except for among us coastal elitist radical demon spawn liberal baby killer types) is actually a story worthy of attention,

Hagee scares the hell out of me.

Absolutely

Diggs...you have hit the nail dead on. Wright's ego and delivery spoil his message, but there's much truth to his words. People are repulsed with his claim of AIDS created against blacks, but there's a far more sinister government activity going on right now: depleted uranium used in Iraq and Afghanistan affecting the citizens AND US soldiers. DU stays on everything it touches indefinitely - and travels around the world. This horrible element was banned many years ago, yet our military still uses it. If this isn't genocide, I don't know what is. Also, the experimental drugs used on our soldiers is criminal. Read Executive Order 13139 that gives the government permission - initiated under Clinton.

The American people can't handle the truth or the fact that our leadership is beyond treason. This accounts for much of our downfall as a great country.

An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it ~Mohandas Gandhi

In our society, growing food yourself has become the most radical of acts. It is truly the only effective protest, one that can - and will - overturn the corporate powers that be. ~Jules Dervaes

Couldn't Agree More

This nonsense about The Rev. Screw-loose has about driven me to distraction. Nevertheless, we all know what this is about. At Least those of us who were born and raised south of the Mason-Dixon line know exactly what it is about. It is about resurrecting the scary, firey black man. Obama simply is not scary for most of us, so let us observe the Rev Wright, over and over, adnauseum, until we are all having nightmares of black people taking over the nation and doing what.....let's see....enslaving the white man, stealing his women and his daughters. Yep, that'll do er! Except it won't. No, not anymore. This is not 1968. There have not been two political murders, depriving anyone of the right to vote on their favorite candidate and/or the presence of their cherished leader. There won't be any riots in Denver as there were in Chicago, which, by the way, were later labeled police riots, as the police were unleashed on the people, by Mayor Richard Daley (D-tough guy), who then fought back). Rush Limbaugh will be most disappointed. If the left were going to riot, they would have certainly done it by now. There won't be any riots. There is no draft. At least not yet. But that is exactly what the far right wishes would happen, if not the assassinations. It seems that the MSM and Cabal news would like it as well and, should such violence erupt, they have only themselves to blame. All I know is this; all my "redneck" friends, who look as if they would surely vote for Mr. War hero, are voting for Barack, as they call him. One was even so bold as to put an Obama sticker on his dump truck. You might see it, if you travel the back roads of S.E Georgia this summer. However, if I am wrong and an uncontrollable need to riot does move us at some point, allow me to suggest that we forget the politicians and their conventions and go directly after the true offenders; the corporate media. They are the ones who made it possible for BushCo to lie us into this miserable quagmire, stirred up questions about our patriotism if we didn't believe the lies or dared to question the motives of the war criminals in the White House, refused to cover any of the peaceful protests here in the U.S., while giving endless coverage to riots in Argentina and the Middle East and who are, currently and obviously, trying to stir up a big story for this summer. If we have learned one thing about corporate America it is this; they only understand one thing and that is money. When their behavior begins costing them, they will think differently. Until then, there will be more of the same silliness. The Rush Limbaughs and Michelle Maulkins of the world will babble on and on, without consequence and the cold civil war here in America will grow worse instead of better.

Joe Andrews - a Grown Up

After reading Joe Andrew's reasons for announcing his endorsement, at this time, maybe we can conclude there is at least one grown-up in the Democratic Party. On the no-shopping thing - today. Yep. Excellent idea. On the "thrown under the bus thing," could we all just stop talking about this? Please.

Is Obama "buying" Delegates???? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB3brK2MoBU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCaEAdk7sew OBAMA HAS BEEN CAUGHT AGAIN IN HIS DECEPTIVE POLITICAL ADS: Fact Check: Obama and the gas taxes. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Democratic Sen. Barack Obama accuses his presidential rivals of pandering to voters by supporting the "gimmick" of temporarily lifting federal taxes on gasoline, despite his own past support for a similar tax holiday. As a state legislator voting for a tax break, Obama even joked that he wanted signs on gas pumps telling motorists that he was responsible for lowering prices. Most experts criticize the idea of a federal tax suspension, but Obama's political opponents accuse him of flip-flopping and ignoring the financial pain caused by today's rising gas prices. THE FACTS: In 2000, gasoline prices were climbing quickly, reaching $2 a gallon in the Chicago area - a remarkable price back then. Illinois legislators scrambled to offer some election-year relief to angry motorists. Obama voted three times for a tax holiday. The version that ended up becoming law required a six-month suspension of the state's share of the sales tax on gasoline, a 5 percent tax paid directly by consumers rather than gas stations. It also required gas stations to post signs on their pumps saying that the Illinois General Assembly had lowered taxes and the price should reflect that cut.

No shopping on last day of each month!

The corporate media is so boring and so robotic. It's as if they do not think, have no original thought and just heartily "go along" to get along. Big help with actually informing a very hungry for true information public. It's time to call them on this, even though it is difficult to 'get their attention' to this matter. One way we are trying to have them and the government to pay attention is this: On the last day of each month buy nothing, nothing. Also, to show one another our solidarity is to display the old American symbol...a simple bandana. Wear it, tie it to your vehicle, briefcase, handbag, backpack, head, arm, etc., etc. It's a simple and quiet way to protest and to also bring a message to corporate america aka government. When nothing is purchased for one day a month, they will notice. Hope to see lots of bandana's being displayed all over this country!

Excellent Idea

Especially about the bandannas. I'll be getting mine out and wearing it to physical therapy this morning. No need to buy gasoline. I ride a scooter these days and need gas about once every two months. Until there is a real energy policy in this country and honest-to-god alternatives, I'll do anything I have to, to deprive big oil of more blood money.
