Israeli and Lebanese Civilians: Pawns in the Neo-Con "Great Game"

A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL

Strategy for self-defense in modern times is like a chess game. It exists on a variety of levels, of which the use of military force should only be used sparingly and for achievable military objectives, not political ones.

After Israeli Prime Minister Rabin was assassinated by a right wing Israeli, the Likkud Party used fear to move Israel away from the Oslo Accords and peace. Instead, they chose, like Bush, to advocate military confrontation as the sole solution to the attack on Israel by extremist Palestinians.

Hezbollah and Hamas are basically well-armed gangs at this point, who are disciplined and well-supplied. Clearly the Likkud Policy that began with an assassination (although no one is accusing Likkud of being responsible for Rabin's death, they didn't particularly mourn his loss either) has been as about effective as Bush's policy in Iraq.

In both cases, it is foolhardy to believe that the entire Arab world will be "conquered" or defeated by U.S. and Israeli air power. That didn't work in Vietnam -- and it certainly is not going to work in the Middle East.

After Israel retaliated against Hezbollah for its killing of Israeli soldiers and kidnapping of two, the Israelis struck back with "shock and awe." The result has been that Hezbollah has unleashed a furious attack of rockets on Israel -- killing many -- and Israel has killed even more civilians in Lebanon. The fighting has been reduced to trench warfare, with the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) making little progress and suffering many casualties (they had already retreated from the Lebanon quagmire once a few years back).

In the modern world, public relations, negotiation and the perception of force counts for a lot more than ineffective trench warfare.

That's a lesson that both the Neo-Con Busheviks (Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Their Puppet George W.) have not learned. Olmert, who despite being head of the new Kadima Party, is really following the Netanyahu anti-peace ("rejectionist") agenda is failing as miserably as Bush has.

Under Rabin, Barak and Clinton, Israel came tantalizing close to a peace treaty with the Palestinians and a Palestinian state that could be held accountable for its behavior as a nation (even with the corrupt and devious Arafat as its head). The Likkud faction in Israel has been as much a failure as the Neo-Cons. They believe that the iron fist is the only solution to every problem.

One tragic irony is that Israel, as a result of the peace moves that began with Jimmy Carter, Sadat and the "old warhorse turned peace agreement signer" Begin have saved Israel from wars reminiscent of the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War.

At that time, all the Arab nations in the Middle East joined in battle against Israel. Now it has peace treaties with Jordan and Egypt (however tenuous they may be) -- and no Arab nation is currently attacking Israel, despite its war with Hezbollah and destruction of the Lebanon infrastructure.

BuzzFlash has offered the notion several times that what is happening in Lebanon is a proxy war. The Busheviks, due to the coming mid-term elections and a public mood against extending the Iraq debacle into Iran and Syria, was -- and probably still is -- hoping that Iran and/or Syria would be drawn into the Israeli assault in Lebanon. This would then allow the Israelis to launch air attacks on either or both of those nations, particularly since Hezbollah largely exists because of Iranian financial backing. In the right circumstances, it might even give Cheney and Rumsfeld an excuse to justify U.S. air attacks on either and both nations.

If you look at the Hezbollah attack on an IDF outpost in Israel and the ensuing war through that prism, both the Israeli public and the Lebanese civilians are pawns in a Neo-Con great game that began with the invasion of Iraq.

Israel should be ensured its safety and well-being, but as the Washington Post reports today, many Israelis are now wondering about the wisdom of Olmert's apparent folly into Lebanon. Hezbollah shouldn't be allowed to launch rockets into Israel, but Olmert has increased the threats to Israelis, not decreased them.

It sounds a lot like the failed Neo-Con policy in the Iraq, because it IS a lot like the failed Neo-Con policy in the Iraq.

The Palestinians have their extremists, and so does Israel. This includes the large number of settlers who were sympathetic to the assassination of Rabin and the Netanyahu "no peace, just conquest" extreme Likkudniks.

Both policies are doomed to failure.

It is most unfortunate for the Middle East, Israel and peace that the Hezbollah gang has turned out, at this juncture, to play a better game of chess than Olmert.

And most tragically, it is the pawns (civilians) on the board who are suffering the most.

neocons

Uh, Capote.... I hate to tell you this, but Joe Lieberman IS a neocon. And he is one of the key players keeping the Democratic Party more or less in line, or at least not seriously opposing, the neocon agenda.

It is time for a new tactic

After decades of responding to attacks with military action, you would think that Israel would try something new. While Israel has the right to defend itself, it is yet another thing to become aggressive to the point where you kill hundreds of innocent civilians just to get a few of the bad guys. We have pumped billions of dollars into the military apparatus of Israel, and next to nothing into trying to lift the people of Southern Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank up. These people need hope, security and opportunity, NOT more fear, poverty, and hopelessness. Israel could do a lot to win the hearts and minds of the average Palestinian and Lebanese person by helping to build them an infrastructure. If we are going to spend a pile of money, we might as well spend it so it will actually accomplish something. DJ Allyn www.liberaltopia.org

Demand an Immediate International Criminal Tribunal for Israel

http://www.petitiononline.com/un040806/petition.html

To: The United Nations General Assembly

The brutal bombings and invasion of Lebanon and Gaza are acts of Israeli state terrorism. The U.S. invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, and the present U.S.-Israeli threat to Syria and Iran indicate their ruthless struggle for hegemony in the oil-rich Middle East, which would escalate into a global war.

At least 900 people have been killed in Lebanon, more than one-third children, and 3,000 wounded. The number of refugees in Lebanon has already exceeded one million. Whole residential areas, roads, bridges, ports, power stations, factories and other infra-structure have been destroyed by Israeli precision bombing. Lebanon’s economic and infrastructure damage tops $2.5B as of 4 August 2006.

In Gaza hundreds have been killed. Homes, greenhouses, bridges, water and sewerage treatment plants and electricity generators have been destroyed in the latest acts of Israeli genocide sadistically code-named ‘Operation Summer Rain,’ which began on 27 June 2006. Israel continues its brutal air strikes on the Gaza Strip almost daily.

Israel must be prosecuted immediately for its war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide against the Peoples of Lebanon and Palestine to stop the war escalating into a global catastrophe. Frances A. Boyle, Professor of Law, University of Illinois, has asserted the legal framework for The United Nations General Assembly to immediately establish an International Criminal Tribunal for Israel (ICTI).

“The United Nations General Assembly must immediately establish an International Criminal Tribunal for Israel (ICTI) as a ‘subsidiary organ’ under U.N. Charter Article 22. The ICTI would be organized along the lines of the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia (ICTY), which was established by the Security Council.

“The purpose of the ICTI would be to investigate and prosecute Israeli war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide against the Peoples of Lebanon and Palestine--just as the ICTY did for the victims of international crimes committed by Serbia and the Milosevic Regime throughout the Balkans.

“The establishment of ICTI would provide some small degree of justice to the victims of Israeli war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide against the Peoples of Lebanon and Palestine--just as the ICTY has done in the Balkans. Furthermore, the establishment of ICTI by the U.N. General Assembly would serve as a deterrent effect upon Israeli leaders such as Prime Minister Olmert, Defense Minister Peretz, Chief of Staff Halutz and Israel’s other top generals that they will be prosecuted for their further infliction of international crimes upon the Lebanese and the Palestinians.

“Without such a deterrent, Israel might be emboldened to attack Syria with the full support of the Likhudnik Bush Jr. Neoconservatives, who have always viewed Syria as ‘low-hanging fruit’ ready to be taken out by means of their joint aggression.

“The Israeli press has just reported that the Bush Jr administration is encouraging Israel to attack Syria. If Israel attacks Syria as it did when it invaded Lebanon in 1982, Iran has vowed to come to Syria’s defense.

“And of course Israel and the Bush Jr administration very much want a pretext to attack Iran. This scenario could readily degenerate into World War III.

“For the U.N. General Assembly to establish ICTI could stop the further development of this momentum towards a regional if not global catastrophe.”

We, the undersigned, demand that The United Nations General Assembly immediately establish an International Criminal Tribunal for Israel (ICTI) as a ‘subsidiary organ’ under U.N. Charter Article 22 to prosecute the Israeli Prime Minister Olmert, Defense Minister Peretz, Chief of Staff Halutz and Israel’s other top generals and war criminals for their infliction of international war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide against the Peoples of Lebanon and Palestine.

Israeli civilians are not pawns; collectively they are the king

Lebanese and Palestinian civilians are less than pawns in this murderous game. The IDF is the queen; Hezbollah's power is that of a pawn (*). Israel's king is not Olmert, it is the Israeli populace that overwhelmingly supports this carnage and keeps Olmert and his like in place. Democracy means responsibility and not just privilege. It is fair to say, however, that the relatively small fraction of Israelis who oppose war and occupation add up to a pawn or two at the bollot box. (*) In chess, a queen is worth about 9 pawns. Relative to the IDF, Hezbollah and other militants add up to almost 1 pawn, based on the kill ratio.

A temporary peace is better than none at all

In the current Israel/Hezbollah/ Lebanon imbroglio, Bush has assumed the role of a malevolent observer rather than participating as an honest broker for peace. His stated reason for not supporting an immediate cease-fire is that a temporary peace is not good enough - that there must be assurance that a permanent peace will be obtained before negotiations can begin. Supporters of this position point out that every past cessation of hostilities (e.g. Camp David, Oslo) has resulted in a mere "temporary" peace. So what? They resulted in months or years of relative quiescence. Given the attitudes of the people on both sides, that's all that can ever be obtained. The only realistic way to proceed is to go from one temporary peace to the next while exploring ways through negotiation to arrive at longer and longer periods of relative tranquillity. American revolutionary and intellectual Benjamin Franklin (no girly-man he) observed, "There never was a good war, or a bad peace." Unfortunately peace isn't a condition that Bush feels comfortable with, so we're not likely to see much of it while he's president. "Mind like parachute. Only function when open." - Charlie Chan

US citizens pawns in the NeoCon Game

We are not in a 'war on terror'....the NeoCon war includes anyone that doesn't follow the party line....that includes US citizens. Why else are they spying on us ... I have liked Buzzflash...but don't buy into the NeoCons have any interest for the US citizen or any other citizen in the world...it is an agenda that only serves them...Why do you think we have talking points...Why is anyone who disagrees with their agenda anti-American ...now, we are called insurgents. Different viewpoints are a democracy folks...compromise is healthy....dictatorship is not. Listen to what our congress is saying....there is a bipartisanship agreement on several points and they both follow the party line....and anyone that doesn't agree is assasinated in the press or loses their seat in Congress. Not all of Congress agress with the NeoCons but they can't afford to disagree...I was in Bulgaria recently, and visiting a Mosque...the guide was a Bulgarian Muslim that had spent 6 years in Elgin, Illinois. He didn't mention Iraq, he didn't mention Lebanon....He said, he feels sorry for American people because they don't understand to fear a government that spies on them.... We have a government spying on us and a congress that is in lockstep....and now CT voters are labeled insurgents (enemies of the state.) The insiders are doing everything possible to keep it the insiders at our expense...we are the savings and loan for their adventures. Also, while in Bulgaria, Pristina, Greece and Macedonia...no one wanted my dollars. Even my son who works for the state department and paid in Euros. He said, it is too hard to get rid of them...no one wants dollars here. The NeoCon adventure has destroyed us economically...that was our strength...they consider destruction a means for change....our foreign policy and economic policy used to always consider the dollar....not anymore....If the Neos don't care about destroying our financial base....they don't care about the US citizen or our country...Sure, the Lebanonese and Israelis are pawns. Both countries are allys...Israel gets bombs and Lebanon gets no ceasefire. What message does that send to the rest of our allys in the region? The neocons called the pro US cedar revolution a success for democracy....do you think this may have had something to do with Condi not being able to land in any Arab country a few weeks ago? We are in desperate need of a website that is not bipartisan on any issue that our congress sends out...we want bipartisan only on the US's best interests....war should not be a political tool of the neocons...and we have to get this message to Congress now.

For those who don't know what a neocon is...

They're neither neo nor conservative... but they're terribly dangerous.

Closing in on Peace

Hezbollah's victory over Israel, contrary to your editorial, enhances the chance for peace. That's because it's the Israelis, as it turns out, not the Palestinians nor Hezbollah, that only understand force; Israeli and not the Arab public that won't tolerate the inevitable heavy losses brought on by trench warfare. How will this enhance peace? By forcing the Jewish settler-state to come to grips with the fact that with the Arab world now emboldened by Lebanon's successful resistance to this latest Israeli invasion, the advantage in the Middle East has shifted to the Palestinian/Arab side Which means that the Israelis are going to have to sit down with their neighbors, not condescendingly as the master with his slave, but as one among equals, and at this meeting the first item on the agenda is sure to be justice for the Palestinian people. What happens once that matter is settled? Peace on earth, that's what.

Great article.

Excellent article and outlook on the current situation.

Clean Break

As usual your comments are well articulated. Yes, this is happening, but it should be shouted from the rooftops that this is all a part of a longterm plan articulated in a paper commisioned by Netanyahu, written by Perle, and supported by Cheney. Known as "Clean Break," it was WRITTEN IN 1996. A blueprint that is being followed in detail right now. Of course, Netanyahu is now head of the Likud Party(he was Prime Minister when "Clean Break" was written)and has been a longtime protege of the Godfather of Neoconism(Fascism), former Secretary of State George Schultz, who was the kingmaker in the scenario which put W in the White House. The goals of this gang are nefarious and should be examined carefully.

Those Globalist PNAC Neocons

Are these people insane? In Mexico thousands of people are protesting an election. What are we as Americans doing? Sitting in Starbucks! These Globalist PNAC chickenhawks need to be excised from our government. Furthermore, ANYONE that signed the Patriot Act needs to be cited for treason for violating their oath of office to "serve and protect" the Constitution! Republican or Democrat!

Their all one big happy family!

The Great Game

Any group of people who look at war as part of a "game" are too far gone to change. What has to change is that we the "pawns" need to stand up and speak out and get rid of these neocons. The world is looking to us, America. We have the most power to stop this game, but if we act like pawns, we will be treated like pawns, and maybe someday as collateral damage again.

Well...

Well, you do realize that in the stragetic game of Chess, pawns are, other than the king, the most important pieces... So, with that being known, it is true what you said: "...speak out and get rid of these neocons"... Furthermore, the neo-libs need to go, too. Look what they're doing to Lieberman. Lieberman is a good man, just because he doesn't walk lock-step with the Dems is no reason to defame him like Lamont is doing. Joe votes Dem 90% of the time... Lamont, voted with the Republicans 80% of the time when he served on a City Council... It makes me nervous that Joe is down in the polls; we don't know what we're getting with Lamont. Capote

I've been tilting at its 'windmill' for several years now; even Buzzflash (my favorite political site--I wear my new hat proudly!)has 'ignored' this potentially 'explosive' question. Think back to Bush in debate with Kerry--the portfolio timber question--"anybody want some wood" --remember how nervous W was? what if he'd been asked--"would you agree--for life-- to 'return' any war-on-your-watch" profit...think the blogosphere would come up with a thing or two in the coming years? a simple question indeed: Lorenzo's Butterfly...it's not hard to imagine in a 'parallel universe' --W so badly blowing his response as to lose the election.
