Throwing Congressional Tantrums Won't Keep the Bush Administration from Its Domestic Spying for Political Purposes

A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL

It hasn’t taken much courage to go out on a limb, as we did in our BuzzFlash editorial yesterday, to claim that the Bush Administration is almost certainly amassing its illegal and legal domestic spying powers for primarily partisan purposes.

No, it’s not courage. It’s just common sense.

We recently laid out the Bush Administration/Rovian three-pronged game book for firmly controlling election outcomes and unilaterally determining the law in the United States -- and don’t think Rove’s long-term strategy for one-party rule is going away, even if he has officially resigned from the White House (remember that this is the crew that openly and brazenly stole the 2000 election, and Rove hasn’t resigned from being a strategist for the Republican Party.)

The reason that the Bush/Cheney administration is so fiercely fighting the surrender of information about their illegal spying on American citizens is because what they have done is far, far worse than Watergate. They have violated the most basic of Constitutional guarantees to achieve political advantage.

Anyone who can’t see that this is what they are doing in their multiple front effort to expand domestic surveillance powers is either naïve or politically compromised.

When the fairly tame New York Times editorial board calls for the impeachment
of Alberto Gonzales, as it did on August 19th, you know that something is up, and that the White House has long ago crossed the threshold of legal behavior into the land where they have racked up potential felony charges far too numerous to count.

As much as we respect Nancy Pelosi and Pat Leahy for what they would do if we had a Democratic president (i.e., respect the Constitution and the rule of law), we find it hard to any longer tolerate their idle threats against the lawbreakers in the executive branch, in the absence of hard-nosed action.

Just yesterday, on August 20, Pat Leahy once again threatened to get tough with the White House over its failure to turn over their records that will indicate illegal non-FISA Court domestic spying (that’s our interpretation of their contents). After the Bush Administration refused to comply with a Congressional subpoena, Leahy declared, "The time is up," Senator Patrick J. Leahy
of Vermont, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said after the 2:30 p.m. deadline passed. "The time is up. We’ve waited long enough."

But in typical Democratic leadership fashion, Leahy added, "I prefer cooperation to contempt."

Ah, yes, we suppose Eliot Ness should have held out the olive branch to Al Capone! The next thing we know is that Pat Leahy is going to get so mad that he will kick an empty can of Van Camp Beans down the Capitol Hill Steps. That will make Bush and Cheney quiver, just wait!

What we have here folks, made even worse by the enhanced executive branch legal domestic surveillance powers just passed by a Democratic Congress, is spying on Americans to achieve political goals: i.e., the continued rule of the Republican Party in the executive branch, as they continue to pack the federal courts with partisan hacks who will uphold their "unitary" dictatorial powers as they incrementally increase them.

What the Bush Administration is doing is not only illegal, unconstitutional, and a subversion of democracy, it is accomplishing the goals of the terrorists -- as outlined by Bush himself -- for them.

Bush keeps telling us that the terrorists (whoever they might be on a given day) "hate us for our freedoms" and want to see democracy destroyed. So, Bush is enabling the terrorists: he is taking our freedoms away without their having to lift a finger at this point.

The terrorists don’t need to launch another 9/11 to see the completion of the dismantling of democracy and the rule of law.

Bush and Cheney are doing that for them.

They are achieving the objectives of the terrorists in the ultimate act of surrendering America.

Right now, at this very moment, the Bush Administration is using legal and illegal domestic spying powers (and now they are declaring that they will be using satellites to spy on us – which means that they already are) for political and self-serving goals.

Franklin Roosevelt displayed remarkable and inspiring leadership when he rallied Americans by saying that the only thing that we had to fear was fear itself.

In 2007, it is our own executive branch whom we have to fear the most, because they are lawbreakers who are working to emulate the Stasi.

Pat Leahy, getting mad won’t accomplish a thing except throwing a tantrum. You are a former prosecutor.

Start prosecuting, stop threatening.

We don’t need whining. We need a conviction.

Democracy, our freedom, and our Constitution depend upon it.

Lawbreakers of the most traitorous sort sit in the White House.

Leahy should know the risks.

His office – along with Tom Daschle’s – was a target of the still unsolved anthrax attacks, just at the time the Democrats temporarily controlled the senate and the "Patriot Act" was under consideration.

The weaponized anthrax used in those attacks (that also resulted in the deaths of postal workers) came from a U.S. bioweapons research lab, which functioned under military supervision. No one was prosecuted for the anthrax terrorist attacks (despite another Bush promise to find the perpetrator), but we do know that whomever did it was almost certainly in some way connected with the U.S. government. Odd coincidence, yes?

Pat Leahy, crimes have been committed – and they are continuing.

You don’t negotiate with the mob if you want to put them out of business – and keep them from spying on you, or sending you anthrax in the mail.

It will continue until we change it

From the history of presidents that I can remember in my life from Nixon- to now Bush- I am seeing/ feeling that he is riding the line with everything including the Constitution. Is he to blame for this? Not really; for we are permitting it. The things that we keep wanting to see change as issues which come forth every presidental election will likely continue until we as a people decide to make it know that we are speaking for change.

As for security-

I agree we must be secure yet; maybe if we were to keep our noses out of the affairs of others then possibly the tension would cease.

But there is hope ...

GENERAL STRIKE SEPTEMBER 11th - NO WORK - NO BUYING - BRING THIS COUNTRY to a STANDSTILL!

They aren't listening to anything else. Not our votes, voices, letters or emails. Maybe they'll listen to our wallets?

Ah, cheer up ...

ah, cheer up, things will get worse ...

Call it Karma, just rewards, reap what you sow, what goes around comes around, our time is up.

We are now paying the price for being a Warrior Nation. We have always been a Warrior Nation. We don't like to think of ourselves as a Warrior Nation, but we are, just ask any Native American Indian.

So the ruthless sociopaths murdered their way to the top and over generations spawned little sociopaths and on and on it went until we find ourselves today with the most insane group of people the world has spawned since Caligula and Nero and more recently Nazi Germany are running everything.

Only this time they aren't just pulling the wings off of flies as Rome burns, or marching millions into their "Final Solution" showers as a band plays on.

This time the insane do indeed have the ability to end all life on this planet as surely and quickly as the Great Yucatan Meteorite wiped out the dinosaurs.

And we, the Great Warrior Nation, the Nation that arms and supplies other Nations to fight either with, for, or, against each other, against us, them against someone else, just as long as someone is killing some one all the time somewhere because it's good for business and we are now paying the price for this folly.

And do you want to know the "good news"?

There is none.

Not unless Space Aliens landed tomorrow and gave us the knowledge to reverse the damage we have already done to this once beautiful Earth, that's even if the insane don't turn it into a cinder-block first. I have only one message - we're fucked.

What we will witness in the next few years will dwarf anything we've experienced in the last few.

Call it Karma.

Congressional Tantrums

After reading Senator Leahy's response, "I prefer cooperation to contempt" to White House continued stalling in producing wiretap documents I sent the Senator a short email that read in part.
"I don't understand the Democratic Party's feeble response to such behavior. Almost immediately upon election as Speaker of the House, Ms. Pelosi took impeachment off the table. Majority leader Reid's responses to aggressive and rude behavior from Senate Republicans is so measured as to tell them 'kick me again.' What is going on? I would like to see some life from Democrats. Are any of you really alive or robots? If the Democrats continue with this concessionary strategy you will never gain the White House in 2008. The face the party presents to the American people is one of capitulation. Who will vote for a party that has been cowed into submission by a swaggering simpleton and his thugs.
Impeach Gonzales, Censure Bush, Impeach Cheney, Stop funding their illegal, bloody war and do it immediately after Congress resumes."
The Democratic Party has an agenda that is angering the people and ruining their [Democrats] chances not only for the White House but the Congress as well. They will lose it all if they continue rolling over and over down the road.

Hizzonor

Senator Leahy, quit whining. What part of Inherent Contempt do you not understand?

Assuming that you respect the oath you took with your office, and while the others who you seek to investigate obviously do not. (What part of "Stop throwing the Constitution in my face, It's just a goddammed piece of paper", G.W. Bush 11/2005, do you not understand?)
Inherent Contempt is actually an action to be taken, rather than the whining and running the clock out that has been going on for the length of the current Congress.

If you have no regard for your oath, Perhaps Mr Cheney's advise was sound.

Go Fuck yourself, Senator

Stop fucking the Constitution, the American People, the Rule of Law and our place in this world.

Leahy not lonely

Don't stop with Leahy in condemning his lack of intestinal fortitude; throw Pelosi and Reed in the mix of gutless Democrats, that don't have the BALLS to stand up to the Bush Cabal. Hell, for that matter, any elected government official, regardless of party, who won't move to impeach and prosecute this traitorous bunch. Impeach Now or simply hang'em for Treason!

To Support and Defend what you don't understand

I doubt whether our Decider in Chief understands much about the Constitution that he has sworn to defend and I doubt whether he has ever given his oath of office much thought. He just is not that kind of guy.

What worries me though is the observation that too many in the legislative branch also seem to lack a good understanding of this important document. Their recent actions have not provided much evidence that they view it as an important document that should be guiding their actions.

Watch What They Do Not What They Say

There is NO evidence that Pelosi and Leahy would do anything different if there were a Democratic President.
If our broken election system gives us a Hillary, that goes double.
There is a great deal of evidence that Pelosi, Reid and Leahy are perfectly happy to sell us down the river with the tattered remains of our Constitution.
Everything the GOP are doing the Democrats were able to do when they were a minority.
They did worse than nothing. They made a cynical choice to support this illegitimate administation and look the other way when it turned destructive.
Now that they have the power to act, they won't use it.
We must hold the Democrats accountable as well as the Bush administration.
We can start by not buying their spin and their miserable excuses.
We demand they act or face the consequences.

"Lawbreakers Of The Most Traitorous Sort Sit In The White House"

Meaning that we've got to get rid of them before it's too late. How? By our prevailing upon Congress to cut off all funding for the Iraq war, that's how, after which, empowered by our victory over the powers that be, how long before said traitors are impeached? No time at all, that's how long.

Thank You for Sounding the Alarm

This editorial needs to be read while listening to a song called "In the Garden of Eden" by the Compassionate Conservatives.

It is such a good match.

Americans have NEVER stood for Tyranny. Will we quit being Americans and turn into SHEEP?

I doubt very much if that is going to happen. Notice how much we HATE SHEEPLE.

Sounding alarm;

Like I said, I do not understand political talk, but if that saying that people are like sheep means that everyone just goes along with what everyone is saying to be agreeable or to have friends, I see it everyday in my personal life.

I NEVER DO THIS, I DID AT ONE TIME JUST TO SHUT CERTAIN PEOPLE UP OR SAY YEAH WHATEVER YOU SAY-BUT IT ALWAYS FOLLOWS.

Going along just to make friends or get someone on your side does not work in the long RUN if the intentions are not good. It catches up.

I had a professor who complained about people being like sheep everyday in class, and he was doing the exact same thing. He would go down my paper making all kind of marks on it, except when I said certain things, the marks seemed to get quiet.

We had to analyze a fairy tale, and I did Snow White. And I said that people who work with others thinking this saying about the ends justify the means only works if the information acted on is accurate-ask many of the people who conspired against me;
and it only works if the people putting their followers up to something does not get caught in one of their lies. The marks all over my paper got really quiet when I said that. The professor, as they all were, were listening to the Dean of Students. But she was acting on a bunch of made up lies herself-plus creating some of her own. I was catching her inconsistencies faster than she could make them up. If I could catch it, certainly people trained to do so could catch her mess ups..

Or was I supposed to just go along with her because of her position although she was passing on inaccurate information originating in Texas...like a sheep??

Funding for the war is not really there, the unjustified gas prices must be where they are pulling the money for the war from. It don't matter who or what is voted or agreed too, if the money is not there, its not there.

People is allowing it. A couple of years, someone from Louisiana said the gas is still cheaper than a gallon of gatorade-that is the menatlity of people in some parts of Louisiana. Like a bunch of sheep.

The reason that the

The reason that the Bush/Cheney administration is so fiercely fighting the surrender of information about their illegal spying on American citizens is because what they have done is far, far worse than Watergate. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

I do not understand that much about politics, and the only reason I am interested in
what is going on now is because of the things directly involving me-which originated
somewhere between international dance professors and the health clubs in Texas.

My and my b/f rights have been violated to no end, and the people-nearly everyone in
Louisiana, including an attorney pretending to be on our side, is more than happy to
go along with it. Among so many other things I caught, he pretended not to know what was
happening when I said our employment was tampered with, and it is nothing in our records.
The same way we are being stalked for character damaging that this attorney pretended not
to know about is the same way they followed our trails to his office-and it was a small
occurrence, but it clearly revealed we cannot trust this attorney. These very people contacted him and he immediately took
the other side. I saw two of the people who followed us to his office. They were two black people, a professional man and woman, giving me some very mean looks as I was coming out of that office. I think they were there to get or give information. Any attorney on our side would have never allowed that. That is going on right here in Louisiana, not orders from Bush. Obviously, there
was some lie made up about a recent incident, and this attorney was trying to get evidence of it. He was getting impatient because there was nothing there to discredit me. Same thing when I was telling him about 15 police cars dogging me at certain times, but they never confront of talk to me.

I have no idea of what it could be, I just figured out that much. After we left the attorneys
office, there was those famous sirens blasting again. So there were people on the outside
listening in. Not all of the spying is coming from Bush-Chris Johns office manager was listening in on my phone calls to make sure a receptionists would not pass me through
to an attorney.

Some attorney in Dallas spoke to me very breifly, (about five years ago) then all traces of him seem to disappear
when I tried to relocate him. He told me that the investors in the health clubs I had
trouble with seem to be international underground. I realize that is very frustrating
for someone who in educated in politics or legallly is very frustrating to talk to me. Because
I do not even understand basic things. I remembered key words he said about the
two health clubs in Beaumont TX. When I tired to contact him again to find out
more, I could not locate him. I had his business card, all the info seemed to be
invalid.

WHAT IS PEOPLE IN AMERICA TO DO, BUT LEAVE THIS COUNTRY?
The only way certain things can be done in Lafayette Louisiana and get by with it is if
they are legally protected. That university of Louisiana, should not have its accreditation,
and there are a couple of dentists in Lafayette, should not have their license.

Everyone is telling me this originated in TX at the health clubs, and it was because
they think I saw something pertaining to financial crimes and illegal steroids, bringing
them into the country. All of this bizarre stuff started occurring when I met those two
dance professors.

No matter where it started, I have not met one person yet who was not willing to
go along with these people conspiring against me or my b/f. Louisiana has been tampering with my employment before I moved to TX. It started with the school system. There is not one person alive in America who would not love for me to go to counseling, not because there is any valid reason for me to go, but because they can then make it look like anything someone says about me is legitimate. If someone, like military troops were working out in that Workout studio fabricated some lie to these iranians concerning me at that time, America needs to come out with the truth about this. When I actually talk to someone, (attorney, chris johns receptionists are 2 examples, and even people pretending to befriend me) just when they say they do not trust bush administration or the government, or whatever,an incident concerning me always puts their true beliefs to the test. I find out who they really are.

So far, no one I met has proven to be someone I can trust.

Terrorism: A pretext for fascism

We are told by the Bush administration that their anti-terrorism policies that violate the Constitution and the Geneva Conventions are needed to prevent terror attacks. They also tell us that none of these policies are being used for ulterior purposes.

There is no basis for this sort of unconditional trust. 9/11 wouldn't have happened if the President and his Cabinet had done their jobs in the lead up to the attacks. The fact is they weren't incompetent, rather they were derelict in their duty. They did nothing to prevent the attacks despite a system blinking red. Thus, we can safely assume the anti-terror polices are intended for an ulterior agenda. That explanation best explains the desperate effort to keep the truth from the public.

Senator Leahy needs to decide if he is with the corrupt fascists or with the supporters of the US Constitution and Geneva Conventions.

Wake up you guys...this country is over

People in this country need to wake up and see that all the rules have changed. Our leaders don't care about the American people at all...Our presidential candidates for 2008 (both parties) are a bunch of cartoon characters who just keep on blustering and blustering about what they will do on their first day in office. Nothing is going to change. And who knows we may not even get a chance to vote in 2008 if BushCo. have their way.

The American people need to stand up and demand that this country goes back to it's founding principles and that our leaders reflect the people's wishes and do the people's business.

We hire representatives we do not crown them.

Unless

Leahy took Cheney's senate floor suggestion to him seriously. Else we be seeing Leahy-led secret holds and filibuster.

The Constitution

Everybody seems to want to drape themselves with the U.S. Flag, but nobody wants to hold up the Constitution of the United States of America.

Our elected representatives in congress seem to have forgotten that THEY as well as the President and Vice President took an OATH to protect and defend, not the FLAG, or the HOMELAND, or even THE SOLDIERS, but THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

So, damn it, get on with it, and WITH PRIDE.

The Constitution is one of the most powerful and UNIQUELY AMERICAN documents of all time -- live up to protecting it as if it MATTERED and you will expose the Rethuglican scum who have been running the White House and Congress for the past 6 years for the un-American traitors that they are.

PRAISE and DEFEND the Constitution and you will show the Rethuglicans for what they are -- neo-fascists intent on a one-party system and a destruction of our Republic.

Remember, it was the elder Bush who uttered one of the most contemptible phrases ever used in political speech: "A card carrying member of the ACLU" as if to imply an organization whose sole mission is to support and defend the Constitution and Bill of Rights could be equated with communism or anti-Americanism.

It was a sign of just how disgusting ALL the Bush family is and has ever been. We should not have expected that the child or that (or the grand-child of a war criminal who financially supported the Nazi's) could ever be anything more than pathetic.

Who Is It That Hates Our Freedoms?

While the call for prosecutorial action for administration crimes is correct and urgent, the argument that Bush is doing "the terrorists' work" for them by "taking away our freedoms" is wrong, and buys into the administration's arguments for its actions.

The "terrorists" are NOT against us because "they hate our freedoms". To equate the Bush cabal's calculated theft of American governance with some non-existent hatred of "our freedoms" is an implicit endorsement of Bush's rationale, and does not help either our analysis or our plans for action.

People around the globe hate and fear the US not because of our freedoms, but because we are slaughtering them militarily, suffocating them economically, or politically twisting their arms out of their sockets. Let's not buy into the cabal's vocabulary and framing of the story. It is only the Bush & Co. terrorists that hate our freedoms because they complicate its agenda.
