The 'Obama eagle': Lost his son in Iraq, now he wants the troops home

I spent the weekend wandering Indiana, focusing on the Obama-Clinton matchup. There were many good stories from the Hoosier state. This is one of them. -- Chad

It was a nice spring day in South Bend, Indiana. Sunny and warm can be the ticket to spending the day doing a number of activities. But Jesse Cao was standing outside in downtown South Bend all day in an eagle costume holding an Obama sign. All day.

I drove by about 4-5 times, seeing him out there. Finally, I had to ask what his reason for standing out there.

Cao told me his son, a 1st Lieutenant, died in Iraq 3 years ago. And he was out there to work to being his friends home from the war. He said we should focus on Afghanistan.

I asked him how the reaction had been. He said tons of people were honking and stopping by during the 4 days he had been out there.

Though Cao is from Lansing, Michigan, he picked a good spot in downtown South Bend to be seen. The business route 31-33 splits off into one-way streets through the downtown area. So whether traveling north or south down the main stretches, you can see the man in the Obama eagle costume.

Cao did point out that he's not against Clinton or McCain, but just wants the troops to come home.

There are lots of ways to show your enthusiasm in this race. Dressing in an eagle costume is certainly one that will draw attention.

I am finally home after

I am finally home after 6 wks in the South Bend, IN. area campaigning for our new president Obama. I did everything I could from registering new voters, to canvassing, and standing on street corners with the famous Obama eagle mascot in order to bring people, presence, and awareness to his message. As you know, while I was canvassing, we were trained from the staff to not do anything negative for either Hillary Clinton or John McCain, and many people have asked me about the tactics I used to support Obama. If I'd understood that your mind was made up on either of those other candidates, more power to you- but that doesn't lessen the fact that I am a complete Obama supporter from day one, and will be to the end of this race. When this reporter came to me and asked me about the contestants, I responded I wasn't against anyone, as trained, but apparently he misunderstood the fact that not only am I against the war, but I truly hope and pray the person who is going to bring change, hope, and unity to our USA will win. Senator Barack Obama. In the 5 days I was on the corner as a volunteer trying to make a difference in this campaign, in 70+ degree weather wearing that hot and heavy costume at felt like 100 degrees, I was doing my best, working as hard as I could to make a difference for all of us here, because we need it. For all of you that have posted here and supported for my loss and what I stand for, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. And to the reporter that wrote this, took the time to take pictures and interview me, I truly appreciate it. I thank you as well. Even though the primary process is finished in Indiana, our work isn't done, there needs to be a change in Washington, it is more than apparent, and it's time for the man who can make that change. I hope and pray you all will follow my lead in working for, supporting, and making a difference in this world let alone the USA by making Senator Barack Obama our next leader. God Bless you all, Jesse "Hussien" Cao Rest In Peace Son 1st Lt Justin Smith

Three years and counting

I hope I have the chance to vote for Obama in November. Hillary Clinton is wrong. To remain will only continue the cycles of death and destruction and bankrupt the US government. Pat Williams

From IN to NC

My deepest sympathies to you Mr. Cao for the loss of your son. I'm proud to have grown up in South Bend, IN and will be voting for Obama in my home of 8 years now in Raleigh, NC. I'm standing with you from 800 miles away to end this war, as is my family that lives in South Bend.

Obama eagle

First I wish to send Jesse Cao my deepest sympathies. Thank you for alerting me to his story. Hopefully we can bring our troops home extremely quickly. An Obama supporter
