Democrats who despise Obama will have a tough choice in November -- More from Indiana

I spent the weekend wandering Indiana, focusing on the Obama-Clinton matchup. I spoke to a lot of people about their feelings. This one in particular stuck with me. -- Chad

"If Obama gets in, it will be the demise of America."

I met Michelle after the Hillary Clinton rally in South Bend, Indiana on Sunday. She was carrying a yard sign for Hillary, and I decided to strike up a conversation.

I asked the typical question I was asking supporters of either Obama or Clinton: What was the number one reason for supporting your candidate? Michelle talked about health care and how that was important.

I then asked her whether it was because Clinton had a better plan or would do a better job of implementing the plan. She nodded to both.

Now I had spent the weekend talking to a lot of people about why they support their candidate, but also asking about what they thought about the other Democratic Party candidate. By and large, supporters of both candidates spoke well about the other candidate.

But Michelle was different. She went on about Obama's middle name, about the horrors of having a "Muslim president," even referring to the school Obama's stepfather has placed him in.

I asked her about the Rev. Wright issue, and didn't that at least prove that Obama was a Christian. She said something about "you got to do what you got to do," as if Obama had been planning for the last 20 years to run for president, and how having a "Christian background" would help his run.

So I asked the next logical question: "If Obama gets the nomination, who will you vote for in November?" She said John McCain. I even followed up by whether she would vote for a third party or independent. She said McCain.

Michelle's mother Jan was alongside her and noted that she had voted for a Republican. "Who was the last Republican you voted for?" She said, "Eisenhower."

To give you an idea of Michelle's background, she is about 46 years old, unmarried, and Caucasian. She said she was about 2-3 years old when Kennedy was shot. Interestingly, she has a sister, also unmarried, who lives in North Carolina.

Toward the end of our chat, she said, "If Obama gets in, it will be the demise of America."

Today, May 6, Michelle will go the polls and will definitely vote for Hillary Clinton for president. But the better question is who will she vote for in November, if Obama is the nominee?

Michelle has two basic choices:

-- She can vote for John McCain. She won't get the health care problems addressed during the next four years. She won't get Supreme Court justices who might find justice in people rather than corporations.

-- She can vote for Barack Obama. She will get the health care problems addressed during the next four years. She will get Supreme Court justices who might find justice in people rather than corporations. But she will have to vote for someone that she feels will be detrimental to America.

It's extremely difficult to imagine Al Gore or Bill Bradley supporters feeling this way in 2000 or Howard Dean, John Edwards, or John Kerry supporters feeling this way in 2004. The goal was clear: get a Democrat in the White House.

But 2008 is going to be one of those years. I spoke with a young, white fast-food worker in Chesterton. She supports the war so much that she is going to go off and fight in it. She told me she didn't like any of the candidates in either party. She won't vote for Clinton because of what she says Bill Clinton ignored in the 1990s from Iraq. She said she might vote for Obama, but not for McCain.

I followed up by saying, "You realize that McCain is the only one for the war and Clinton and Obama are against the war." She did know that. She thought it was a little funny. Who knows if she will even vote today, but for her, it wasn't as clear cut, even though the only candidate she might vote for didn't support her main issue.

As for Michelle, the Democrats may have to write off voters like her in November. And it might mean losing a state or two or having to work harder in those states. She was a Democrat, who in May, was seriously considering the Republican candidate because she really didn't like the other Democratic Party candidate. And this after eight horrible years under George W. Bush. Michelle's choice today is clear; in 6 months, well, she has a long time to think about that.

Choice in Nov.

White middle America will not vote for a black Kenyan Muslim named Hussain no matter how untrue the above is.White working class Americans will not vote for a black Harvard snob.Mexican Catholic Americans will not vote for a black revivalist Christian whose minister hates the country they love.Single white working women will not vote for a black Harvard snob who eats arrugula and thinks they are bitter people because they cannot go to Harvard on a scholarship.

What?

Are you insane?

Out Of Touch

Just goes to show how out of touch and ill informed the American people really are and there is still alot of bigotry in this country. Listening to Rush Bimbo and people like him hurt this country the Corporate media in general does not help either. If you have not listened to the man and his wife speak with passion about change to lead the country forward rather then backward as some people want to do then there is something wrong here and you are not a Democrat. Billary would do anything at any cost to get in the White House. In North Carolina we saw thru her sham of lies and deceit.

some will stay away

Some dems will stay away from Obama - they just won't vote for a black man... I would not vote for Hilary if she won - she has shown me her true colors. This thing was suppose to be giving to her and it wasn't. Now the reality is she is going to lose and the dream of husband and wife being president is not going to happen. Go Obama

Proposal on Michigan and Florida. Obaama's Nuclear Option.

After today, Obama should be so far ahead that even with Hillary's expected blowout wins in W.Va. And Ky., he can give her her pretend wins in Fla. and Mich. and still beat her in pledged votes. Perhaps he should propose that as a consolation prize for the loser. That would shut her up, or would it?

Where are those superduper lamebrains and what are they waiting for?

On Nov. 5th Hillary Clinton's Supporters Will Vote For Obama

"How's he going to win their support." "The same way he won the Democratic nomination." "Which is?" "Giving his word that if elected he'll end the Iraq War, negotiate with Iran plus turning things around here at home." "And then what sort of world?" "It'll be up to us."

Protest vote for McCain

In case you didn't get the memo: You Omabatans have so disrespected HRC and alienated her supporters from the outset of this primary season-- and continue to do so -- that we will NOT vote for your savior candidate. Our vote for McCain will be a protest vote. He's going to win anyway, so at least our vote in November will count for something this time around!

math question

Michelle told me she was 2 or 3 when Kennedy was assassinated, meaning she was born in 1960 or 1961. If she hasn't had her birthday yet in 2008, it makes her 46 or 47 years old. I didn't press the issue because it seemed rude and irrelevant. I wanted to give an idea of her age in the story so people can make their own impressions.

I am reminded of the fact

that some Democratic voters despise Hillary as much as the GOP voters do...Hillary has shown herself to be a liar, a back stabber, a corporate shill and a panderer, she has resorted to "below the belt blows", I thought only the GOP would stoop too...a bitter, twisted woman who feels she has the "right" to the White House...I am not sure I will vote at all if the nominee is Hillary...control of the Supreme Court nominations and the DOJ would be the only reason I would vote for her...I damn well resent the fact that again, I might be left with only, a choice between the better of two evils..Hillary or McSame..

Remember Kennedy in

Remember Kennedy in 1980 http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/post/

The voters "like her" were also the same who went for Bush ..

There are some Democrats and/or rednecks who value what the Democratic party stands for: human rights, equal justice, environmental protections, higher education, a healthy balanced economy, military power balanced with diplomatic power, science and technology which include the principles of gravity. Those who believe otherwise, were never in our column anyway. And that's actually a good thing, because the Democratic party needs more Joe Lieberman's or Zell Miller's like it needs ...well her. Those who vote Obama, vote because they look to seeing to it that her life is better. While those who vote against Obama can only fall in two columns, either a. they believe Hillary or McCain will be better than Obama -for themselves and their fellow Americans, or b. they believe anyone but Obama is better -for their own personal interests. If Buzz Flash truly believes in their own slogan "Fight Ignorance", there is only one candidate they too should endorse. VIVA OBAMA/RICHARDSON?MCCASKILL?CLARKE(RICHARD)?SHINSEKE? '08! Nationalism is not terrorism. And an adversary is not an enemy.

D minus voters

Reading the commentary from Michelle, I never thought I would be for voter tests in order to vote in this country. But hearing the illogical reasoning coming from this woman and others along the way makes me want to push such tests. Heck, immigrants wanting US citizenship have to take tests. We all have to pass driving tests to operate an automobile. We have to take 4 years of class testing and exams to graduate from high school and college. Here comes Michelle who is an example of many voters in this country ... ignorant and fortunate to know who the candidates are and some actually vote based on their ignorance. Sorry to say, I have a politically ignorant friend who asked where the military gets the money to run the war! Yep, a good voter test would eliminate quite a few voters who refuse or are incapable of studying the issues, then vote on a whim like they're at a race track.

There are a lot of racists in America

You are right. Our worst racists are those who hear the word Caucasian or White and instantly point the finger of racism. Just because a WHITE PERSON said something you disagree with, that doesn't make them a racist. If a Black person says something you disagree with, do you define them so? It is pretty sad that most African American's are unable to understand what hypocrites they are. Oh, I guess they do understand, it is just that they don't care. According to Black belief, all Whites deserve mis-treatment. Equality means that Whites should be not only maligned but oppressed. It is only fair, right? The Black community built this country and recieved none of the benefit. Realistically, if a country could be built by pulling weeds, Africa would be the greatest civilization on Earth. The problems African-American's have incorporating White civilization into their lives were not created by Whites. It is caused by their own refudiation of White values and habits. You succeed in a civilized society according to your dedication toward civilized actions and hard work. As the civilizer of the world, or method is most effective. Yes, it has been improved upon in other countries, but those who deny the basic principles' importance marginalize THEMSELVES.

You are absolutely correct.

And you are one of the vilest racists around. I suppose we should be glad you didn't write that blacks should be glad they were brought to America where they could learn about Christianity and how to pick cotton. I didn't realize one could get web access in an outhouse.

Michelle

If Michelle was 2 or 3 years old when JFK was shot, she isn't 46 years old. Someone who is 46 years old would have been less than 2 years old in 1963.

You need to re-check your math

If she was 46 today, she was somewhere between 18 months and 2 and a half years old when JFK was assassinated. 18 months old if she just turned 46 ... 2 1/2 years old if she's just about to turn 47.

I'm Michelle's age and you're right...

born 6/21/61 - JFK shot 11/22/63 - I was 2 years & 5 months old - and I'm about to be 47. My first "younger" presidential candidate - I'm both excited and scared. Holy crap - it really IS up to us, now.

Michelle -

On the basis of one interview with two - maybe three --- let me guess - Anglo women -- you write a complete column stating that if Obama is the nominee of the Democratic Party, he will lose these votes, and a "couple of states". Most "random sampling polls" at least contact a couple of hundred people. Your conclusions are based on the opinions of three people. Unbelievable. As a Democrat, I don't think I'll start to worry just yet. My vote will cancel out Michelle's.

There are a lot of racists in America

but that doesn't mean that we should cater to them.

If we yield to those who appeal to the worst in us, we will never have a leader who serves the best in us.

I agree!

It is time to appeal to our better natures, rather than our fears and prejudices. Some of these people will NEVER come around. However, given the opportunity (in an uplifting, inspirational campaign) some of them will. We should always leave our hearts and minds open for people to CHANGE. This is, after all, the time for Change We Can Believe In.
