Republicans panic and try doing some work in Congress; afraid of losing more elections

Congress can feel like a jungle in passing legislation. -- Chad

In the jungles of Congress, there are two main species: Democraticus hardworkus and Republicanus status quous. Unfortunately, neither of them will ever become extinct. But we are starting to see strange patterns in the Republicanus status quous.

We saw 35 Senate Republicans vote with the Democrats on a $290 billion farm bill. We saw Republicans vote with Democrats to temporarily halt shipments of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

When the Republicanus status quous ruled the jungle between 1994-2006, they never feared about being perceived at not getting lots of legislation done. Heck, they thought shutting down the government was a great idea. They would go into elections not with a cry of "Look what we did" but more like "Look at what we didn't do." And their base loved it.

The Democraticus hardworkus cringes when things in Congress don't get done and hate it when the sloth of the Republicanus status quous got rewarded. "Hey, Congress never does anything anyway. So maybe it's good nothing got done," is a mantra many Americans subscribe to, even if things such as bridges in Minnesota collapse.

But now the Republicanus status quous is in a panic. Suddenly, the nothingness of their philosophy isn't working. The people demand results from Congress. And their panic is also fueled by special election defeats in such Republicanus status quous dominant areas such as Mississippi.

Even though the Democraticus hardworkus are back in charge, the Republicanus status quous has worked really hard to prevent anything getting done. And that has made those who support Democraticus hardworkus very unhappy.

But there is a magical solution: get more Democraticus hardworkus in Congress. And there's one more solution: change the philosophy of the American public to accept that good things can come from Congress. We have a new generation of Americans that has accepted that nothing much ever gets done in Congress, and doesn't correlate a lack of progress with bad things happening as a result.

The Republicanus status quous reign of power did a lot of horrible damage, but their lasting legacy is diminishing the perception of what Congress is capable of doing. If the Democraticus hardworkus can increase their margins in November, it can be the start to shifting that dynamic. There's a lot of hard work to do, but the Democraticus hardworkus has been breeded to do just that. They have to stand up for what's right; after all, it's a jungle out there.

Re: Sen. Kennedy Hospitalized After Suffering Seizure

Does it look like panicking repubies' work? Does to me, my friends. I know, I know, I am paranoid. But every time something drastic happens to any of the democrats, (remember Paul Wellstone?) I can't help but suspect repubies. I bet they are in this one up to their eyeballs. I just wonder what they poisoned him with.

For how long?

Cheating got bush into power, and kept him there for a second term. 9/11 handed the neocons their complete agenda on a silver platter. Point being, no matter how dissatisfied people are right now and how hard the Dems work to put things right, there's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip, and it would only take a small nudge over the next few months to put both chambers and the oval office back in the hands of the drown-the-govt-in-a-bathtub crowd.

But it looks like the establishment is ready for a president to perform the same function Carter did in the wake of Vietnam and Watergate: to quell civil discontent & restore some degree of faith in the system. This will be done in a single term, and then his usefulness will be exhausted.

So the question to me is less about continuing to support Dems as they work hard, and more about whether Dems will anticipate and prevent the dirty tricks that the neocons will undoubtedly employ to swing the pendulum back their way. Dems will not only have to work hard, but also work smart. So far I've seen no indication they will do that. The smart thing would have been to impeach the most impeachable president (& VP) in history. This way, not only would they have reversed the dangerous and illegal precedents set by bush & co, but the investigations would have shown everyone just how deep and wide is the corruption of that party. Instead Dems are content to wait for the natural course of events to wash them back into power. But if they can't take control of the tide, it will turn against them in a heartbeat.

Well said, malcontex!

You are absolutely correct, Malcontex... the American public for a decade has had the luxury of wallowing in abject ignorance and short-sighted self-interest, which is to say perceived self interest, i.e. greed.

Ironically, the leaders of the Right are using the concepts of Christianity (and Judaism) to....treat America and the public like Romans during the era of Rome in decadent decline, with our entertainment-uber-alles - the BREAD and CIRCUS agenda, and the need for every more wars of colonial conquest to feed those bloddy circus "games".
(To spell it out, spectacles of bloody murder and wanton sadism in the name of "moral values" God(s), emperor, and country.)

Why can't Americans even put one-and-one together, and realize that the same folks today banging the drums of "MORAL VALUES!" the loudest... sound exactly like their forefathers, the preachers and political leaders thumping the bible and banging the drums of fear and hatred to JUSTIFY SLAVERY?

And you are spot on about Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. These two are worth at least $200 million to Right Wing Republican electioneering, because as soon as Repubs lose the White House, they will immediately START BLAMING the economic malaise of this decade... ON DEMOCRATS! Yes, Pelosi, Reid, and crew are TOO STUPID to remember that TIMMY McVEIGH BLEW UP the US government building in Oklahoma City.... blaming "the government" and "tax-and-spend Democrats" for the complete lack of jobs in upstate New York during the Bush1 Recession, (a full 3 years after Clinton defeated Bush Sr's. re-election campaign) after he was involuntarily discharged from the Army following his stint in combat in Gulf War 1!

An even better parallel is the story of Jim McDougal and his Madison Guarantee Savings & Loan.
After the New York Lyin' Times and Washington Cowardly Post joined Republicans in banging their "WHITEWATER!" headlines for weeks, months and years at a time, the American public came to see the hapless Jim McDougal as a _BIG PLAYER_ in the Massive S&L debacle which directly led to the Bush1 Recession
(see Pizzo et al, "The Looting of America's Savings and Loans),
http://www.amazon.com/Inside-Job-Looting-Americas-Savings/dp/006098600X
even though the govt. claimed losses to McDougal's S&L were just $22 million, a drop in the bucket compared to Silverado S&L (Neil Bush a director; cost to taxpayers $1 billion), or Keating's Lincoln S&L (John McCain one of the "Keating 5" senators on Keating's bribe list, er, payroll, er, "donor list,") which losses cost American taxpayers TWO BILLION DOLLARS.

The fact that Democrat Senator John Glenn was also one of the Keating 5 Senators just illustrates the Democrat's tendencies to take THEIR marching orders from Big Donors, from Big Biz, Wall St., the financial community, and nowadays, the major-media robber-barons.

Well, we know that Speaker Pelosi has been bought off by the AIPAC lobby,
http://www.vdare.com/buchanan/070319_pelosi.htm
just as John Glenn was bought off by Charles Keating.

And we know that the Bush1 recession led to Timmy McVeigh, and wild talk about "black government helicopters" and Nixon CIA goon and uber Right-Wing operator G. Gordon Liddy calling for "patriots" to "aim for the head" when shooting at black uniformed US government law-enforcement officers.

In REFUSING to cut into the cancer of Republican, Bush-Cheney corruption and misrule over America, and put all that dead and diseased tissue (corruption, lies-to-war, stolen elections, torture, illegal surveillance, etc.) under the microscope of Congressional inquirey (FORCING the "major media" to pay attention, not asking their permission about what is and is not permissable for Democrats to do), the Dems leaders are allowing that Republican right-wing cancer to metastasize, PELOSI and REID are PREPARING THE WAY for REPUBLICANS to REPEAT 1994 ALL OVER AGAIN!

(The Republicans taking the House AND Senate in 1994 of course coming two short years after Bill Clinton won the White House from Bush Sr.)

Revenge

... and when the dems get overwhelming majorities in the House AND Senate plus a democratic president, their party should be careful to blame anything that goes wrong on Bush (like Bush did to Bill Clinton.) Every stupid thing Bush did was blamed on Clinton as it backfired ... and most of Bush's inept presidency backfired. He is so low he could walk under closed doors. If this sounds like revenge, it is exactly that. Revenge is mine, sayeth Captain Jessie and 82% of real Americans!
