WILLIAM RIVERS PITT FOR BUZZFLASH AT TRUTHOUT

Dear BuzzFlash readers,

Eighteen years ago, in the infancy of the progressive internet and the aftermath of Bush v. Gore, an activist named Mark Karlin started a website called BuzzFlash where all the important news of the day could be collected in one easy place. It was a fairly new thing at the time, a labor of love, and a vital one. For many, BuzzFlash was a lifeline to sanity in those dark and lonely days.

Today, after 18 great years, BuzzFlash is closing up shop for good.

Economists call it "creative destruction," and it is unavoidable for the most part. As Jed Bartlet said on "The West Wing," do we stop making digital clocks to protect Swiss watchmakers? So it goes with BuzzFlash. I find that to be pretty remarkable, actually. It is not a bad thing not to be needed anymore, so long as the need is fulfilled.

The BuzzFlash Commentary links will all remain live. BuzzFlash's best original contributors will now be appearing on Truthout. Mark Karlin has moved on to a profoundly earned semi-retirement. The other BuzzFlash editors will now concentrate fully on journalism and production for Truthout. The fight goes on.

Thank you for supporting BuzzFlash for all these years. It has been a tremendous honor to serve you as we could.
