Fires lure looters who prefer to work
Under skies that smoke has turned black

Check out the page 1 photo on the Thursday, Oct. 25 front page of The New York Times. It shows two rows of completely destroyed homes in San Diego, and two virtually untouched homes right in the midst of them.

The caption makes no mention of it, and indeed in news story after news story, reporters talk about the seemingly whimsical way the fire destroys some houses while bypassing others, but what the two homes in that photo that are seemingly unscathed have in common is red tile roofs.

Cindy Sheehan

"You don't have money to fund the war or children. But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement." Pete Stark (D-CA)

"While Members of Congress are passionate about their views, what Congressman Stark said during the debate was inappropriate." Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

Jeff Fleischer: Hail to the Victors?

By Jeff Fleischer

Time was, the term "rogue state" was reserved for international troublemakers fond of human-rights violations -- the North Koreas and Zimbabwes of the world. Lately, the same construction has also been showing up in headlines referring to the likes of Michigan and Florida. Their crime? Moving their presidential primaries earlier in the year in violation of party rules.

This means that right about now
I bet would probably be the peak

by Peter Phillips

Hundreds of Santa Rosa, California activists rallied to end the Iraq occupation and demanded impeachment of the war criminals in the White House. The rally featured Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) who said, "we need to bring our troops home now!" The rally was cheered on by radio hosts Evelina Molina, Miguel Molina, and Dennis Bernstein from KPFA's Flashpoints program.

Dave Lindorff: Dead Men and Women Walking

The Democratic Party in Congress, and indeed the leading candidates for the party's presidential nomination, are all dead men and women walking.

They look alive. They may even think they're alive. But their political futures are close to moribund.

Faced with grave moral issues -- a criminal and unpopular war costing the country the lives of thousands of its young people, and hundreds of billions of dollars a year, a president who treats the Constitution like so much toilet paper, and an economy being hollowed out like a Halloween pumpkin, these Democrats are doing nothing.
