MS. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON

BuzzFlash,

Many people consider the things which government does for them to be social progress, but they consider the things government does for others as socialism. -- Earl Warren, speech, Madison, Wis., June 1955.

For some time, it should have been crystal clear that the Bush-Cheney regime was utterly and proudly impervious to record-level disapproval ratings, massive outpourings of democratic public outrage, exposures of flagrant violations of both the Constitution and the Geneva Conventions, and revelations about slavishly serving the interests of huge corporations and campaign contributors.

BARBARA'S DAILY BUZZFLASH MINUTE

Welcome to the “Wonderland”, created by George Bush, Dick Cheney, and mainstream corporate media in America! A “looking glass” of smoke and mirrors designed to shape opinion and bend reality as only the Bushies can do! “…the big Bush ‘withdrawal’ plan is to reduce the number of Army brigades by one and then,"[t]wo of the [Guard] units will be full combat brigades heading to Iraq." The supposed pending ‘withdrawal’ amounts to reducing the number of U.S. troops by 3,500 and INCREASING it by how many? Well, according the AP report, "All together, the Guard announcement would involve about 20,000 soldiers."

George Bush is no lame duck. You aren't lame when you're getting your way on everything. At a press conference this week, instead of quacking like a duck, he was strutting like a peacock, and warning the world of how relevant he still is. The Decider Guy is dancing with the stars. A 24% approval rating, a (still mostly) lapdog press and Orwellian delusions continue to assure him that he can do as he damn well pleases. In other words, he has another 18 months to take this country farther down a rat hole. And the one thing he knows for sure is the gutless opposition has no serious plans to stop him.

Subject: Bye, Bye Blackwater

So let me get this straight, Blackwater will not have its Iraq contract renewed (in other words they've been fired). Read Robert Scheer's "Blackwater: The U.S.'s Trigger Happy Guardians" (alternet).

BARBARA'S DAILY BUZZFLASH MINUTE

Everywhere you look in the Middle-East, the Bush debacle is spreading disaster, death and destruction! “ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Good evening. We have got breaking news again tonight, huge and blood-soaked bombing in Pakistan. They are still picking through the wreckage. The pictures tell the story, still identifying twisted bodies after a suicide bombing aimed at killing a former Pakistani leader, signs our ally in the war against al Qaeda has its own problems with terrorists. And, don't forget, Pakistan also has nuclear weapon. So, instability there matters even more.”

Judge Mukasey Should Be Opposed For Attorney General ... Unless He Commits To The Constitution

This can be said briefly: There is a great debate in Washington between the Judge Mukasey who testified on his first day of confirmation hearings, and the Judge Mukasey who testified on his second day of hearings.

It was extraordinary and unprecedented. In his second day of hearings, Judge Mukasey appeared to support what the free world would call torture; appeared to support extreme reaches of presidential power; and appeared to be willing to put presidential power ahead of long accepted constitutional protections.
