Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman took a moment in his testimony in the impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump to send his father—and, by extension, the rest of us—a powerful message about stepping forward to tell the truth.

“Dad, my sitting here today, in the U.S. Capitol, talking to our elected professionals, is proof that you made the right decision 40 years ago to leave the Soviet Union and come here to the United States of America in search of a better life for our family,” Vindman said at the conclusion of his opening statement. “Do not worry, I will be fine for telling the truth.”

What’s particularly poignant about that statement is that Vindman and his family are concerned about their security, to the point of talking to the Army about what steps could be taken to protect them if there’s an imminent threat. No wonder they’re worried, with Vindman under attack by Republicans. Yet Vindman still expressed his faith in the United States government to hear him speak the truth and to keep him safe while doing it.
