As was revealed in an interview published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution over the weekend, Bernie Marcus, the billionaire co-founder of Home Depot, wasn’t shy about praising Donald Trump. He went as far as to say that he thinks Trump has “a businessman’s common sense approach to most things.”
Even worse, he went as far as to confirm that he’s planning to give Trump donations for his 2020 campaign. “Now, do I agree with every move that he makes? No, I don’t,” the 90-year-old Marcus said. “But the truth is he has produced more than anybody else. He has… If we look at this country, I would say that we are better off today than we were eight years ago or six years ago.”
People are calling for a boycott of Home Depot. This isn’t the first time people have rallied to boycott the home improvement store because of how much Marcus loves the sitting president. In fact, in 2016, news broke that Marcus had donated $7 million to Trump’s campaign. He even wrote an essay about why he was standing with Trump.
Even pre-Trump, Marcus, who retired from Home Depot in 2002, donated millions to the Republican Party. So none of this is too surprising, but still, people on Twitter are not pleased:
Home Depot issued a statement explaining its stance. "Bernie retired from The Home Depot more than 15 years ago and isn’t speaking on behalf of the company," the chain’s spokesperson Margaret Smith told The Hill. "In fact, as a standard practice, the company does not endorse Presidential candidates."
What do you think about the boycott?
