A Chip Off the Old Blockhead: Liz Cheney Blames Turkey Attacking Kurds on Democrats’ Impeachment Inquiry

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) claimed Monday that Turkish President Recep Erdoğan timed his military’s assault on the Kurdish people based on House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry of Trump.
“I also want to say that the impeachment proceedings that are going on, and what the Democrats are doing themselves to try to weaken this president is part of this,” Cheney said during her appearance on “Fox & Friends.”
“It was not an accident that the Turks chose this moment to roll across the border, and I think the Democrats have got to pay very careful attention to the damage that they are doing with the impeachment proceedings.”

Erdoğan launched his assault on the Kurds after Trump gave what many consider a “green light” for the Turkish incursion that has killed civilians while allowing hundreds of ISIS fighters to escape from the Syrian prison where they were being held.
While Cheney is attempting to shift blame for Turkey’s actions to Democrats, Trump’s unilateral decision to withdraw U.S. troops has been widely condemned not just by Democrats but by his own party, as well as current and former intelligence officials.
Gen. Mazloum Kobani Abdi, who commands the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, has also criticized the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
“You have given up on us. You are leaving us to be slaughtered,” he told U.S. diplomat William Roebuck, deputy special envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, in a meeting Thursday.
“You are not willing to protect the people, but you do not want another force to come and protect us. You have sold us. This is immoral,” Abdi added.
Meanwhile, even as the House pursues its impeachment inquiry — which several polls have shown a majority of Americans support — a bipartisan group of lawmakers in the House is drafting a resolution condemning Trump’s withdrawal of U.S. forces.
