San Francisco's Board of Supervisors Officially Labels NRA a "Domestic Terrorist Organization"

On Tuesday, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors officially adopted a resolution designating the embattled NRA as a domestic terror organization.

“The City and County of San Francisco intends to declare the National Rifle Association a domestic terrorist organization,” says the document.

Additionally, the resolution called on the city and county of San Francisco to “take every reasonable step to assess the financial and contractual relationships our vendors and contractors have with this domestic terrorist organization,” and encouraged other cities, states, and the federal government to take a similar position.

The resolution was prompted by the July mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, where three people were killed and 13 injured.

District 2 Supervisor Catherine Stefani told the KTVU television station that the shooting, followed by the shootings in El Paso, Dayton, and Odessa, along with the NRA’s ongoing opposition to gun safety, motivated her to draft the resolution.

“The NRA has it coming to them, and I will do everything that I possibly can to call them out on what they are, which is a domestic terrorist organization,” Stefani said. “People are dying every day in this country … and doing nothing is not an option, and that’s what the NRA continues to do.”

Most recently, the NRA gave marching orders to Trump to back off universal background checks after he initially voiced support for them. After meeting with NRA Chief Executive Wayne LaPierre, Trump did as he was told.

The obedience to the NRA’s latest directive occurred even as the organization has been rocked with a series of scandals and disclosures about its inner workings.

The group attempted to finance a multi-million-dollar home for LaPierre and spent thousands on his wardrobe even as it lost donors, was forced to shutter its NRA TV arm, and came under scrutiny for connecting with an admitted Russian spy.

The NRA has even had trouble at the ballot box, as it failed to prevent Democrats from taking the House in 2018. The Democratic majority then passed gun safety legislation that is being held up by one of the NRA’s top allies, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

San Francisco’s resolution is a rebuke of the NRA from a major American city — something that would be unthinkable just a few years ago.

It’s another black eye for what was once an untouchable organization.
