The Independent just reported that more than 1500 alumni from Rhodes College in Memphis are circulating a statement in opposition to fellow alumna Amy Coney Barrett being confirmed to the Supreme Court. As the Independent noted about the protest petition:

Rhodes alumni Rob Marus and Katherine Morgan Breslin wrote a letter criticizing Barrett's stances on abortion law, the LBGTQ community and the Affordable Care Act. Signed by 1,513 alumni and posted online, the letter says the alumni are “firmly and passionately opposed to her nomination," declaring Barrett fails to represent their views and values.

“We are likewise firmly and passionately opposed to Rhodes administrators’’ attempts to embrace Amy Coney Barrett as an alumna of our beloved alma mater,” the letter said. “We oppose this embrace because we believe both her record and the process that has produced her nomination are diametrically opposed to the values of truth, loyalty, and service that we learned at Rhodes.”

Trump’s Press Secretary Keyleigh McEnany, however, told a White House media briefing last week that Barrett was a “Rhodes Scholar.” Maybe it was an honest mistake; maybe it wasn’t. From the flak for the president of more than 20,000 official lies, it is hard to separate the fact from the fiction.

Slate noted:

The Rhodes Scholarship program was established by the British arch-imperialist Cecil Rhodes at the dawn of the 20th century, to help create a unified, Oxford-educated ruling class across what he hoped would be a globe-dominating Anglosphere. Rhodes College is a private liberal-arts school in Tennessee.

No one disputes that Barrett has excelled at academics and as a law professor and judge. However, many of her fellow graduates of Rhodes College view her legal and personal religious positions as objectionable in an embracing multi-cultural society.

We do know, however, that Judge Barrett is not a Rhodes Scholar.
