Mark Karlin: Clarence Thomas Recommended Law Student Who Texted "I Hate Black People" for Prestigious Federal Clerkship

In voluminous texts to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Ginni Thomas was recently nailed as a Qanon-spouting “Big Lie” supporter who wants Sidney Powell’s “Kraken” to be released and Biden Campaign members to be sent to Gitmo.
So it might be no surprise as far as whackadoodle extremism goes that she and hubby Clarence successfully supported an avowed racist to become a highly competitive clerk on the 11th Circuit Court in Atlanta. After serving as number two leader at the Youthful GOP political group, Turning Point, Crystal Clanton, now a student at Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University in Virginia, became Ginni’s personal assistant.
Rumor had it that Clanton was fired from Turning Point for blatant racism. Most notably the impeccable Jane Meyer of The New Yorker showed a reproduction of a Clanton text that blares: “I HATE BLACK PEOPLE… I hate blacks. End of story.” Clanton claims she doesn’t “recall” the text.
According to the Colorado Newsline:
The House Democrats’ letter details other reported incidents, such as when Clanton sent a photo of a man with brown skin to her co-workers with the caption “just thinking about ways to do another 9/11,” according to the publication Mediaite.
When she worked at Turning Point USA, Clanton fired the organization’s only Black employee on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and that employee stated in The New Yorker article that she felt “very uncomfortable working there because I was black.”
The quotation refers to a letter some House Democrats sent last winter complaining that the selection of Clanton put a stigma on the Circuit and was “alarming.”

The House Democrats wrote to Justice John Roberts as the presiding member of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the national policy-making body for the federal courts. They also addressed the letter to Judge Charles Wilson, the most senior active member of the 11th Circuit appeals court.
They said while the reported remarks are “worrying in the extreme,” their concern was more that Pryor and Maze would make such a hire. They said the clerk’s past conduct was clearly available at the time of the hiring decisions.
“If the judges were not aware of their law clerk’s widely reported record, their negligent hiring practices present their own set of problems with the judiciary and the judges’ abilities to discharge their administrative responsibilities competently,” the Democrats said.
The judicial review board did not find fault with Clanton’s appointment.
Notably, a January 20, 2022 American Bar Association Journal article noted that Ginni Thomas’s “Best Friend,” Clarence assisted in the hiring of the bigot:
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas had written a letter to … on Clanton’s behalf, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He said he had recommended Clanton as a law clerk to Pryor.
Thomas said Clanton had lived in his and his wife’s home for almost a year after the woman left Turning Point USA.
According to the ABA Journal:
One of the lawmakers, U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia, said in a statement the decision tossing the ethics complaint was “nothing more than a rubber stamp that gives two influential federal judges cover for hiring a law clerk with a reported history of racist conduct.”
It is clear that Clarence Thomas needs to do more than recuse himself from many cases before the Supreme Court. For the sake of anti-racism, he, ironically, needs to resign or be pushed from the court.
