Donald Trump and Joe Biden represent two profoundly different sides of human nature. Trump represents the dark and selfish impulses of the human id. Winning is all that matters to him. And using any means to win is okay with him. His life is a classic example of the will to power that we’ve seen exhibited by every dictator and would-be dictator throughout history. For men like him, lying, cheating, and stealing are the chief means for gaining power and establishing a dictatorship. Being a killer, both figuratively and literally, is okay as well. Joe Biden, on the other hand, is a perfect example of the bright and unselfish side of the human heart. It’s not that he is a perfect human being, it’s just that through the experience of suffering and loss he has learned the importance of empathy in human affairs. And he has learned the importance of using power, not just for self-aggrandizement, but for the common good of others.
Donald Trump appeals to the dark side of the human id in others. He appeals to their fear, anger, frustration, selfishness, and ugly biases. He divides people and turns them against each other. He takes one side, the side that supports his divisive agenda, and turns that side against those who don’t, thus giving one side an enemy to hate and giving himself an army of haters. In doing this, instead of uniting Americans, he divides them, creating a divided nation, which cannot stand. Conversely, Joe Biden appeals to the bright side of the human heart. He appeals to people’s empathy and compassion. He tries to unite people by appealing to the better angels of their nature. He tries to help people to recognize the common suffering that we all share as sentient beings, and he tries to unite us as Americans. He tries to remind us that ‘divided we fall and united we stand.’
If Donald Trump is reelected, the seeds of division that he has sown will continue to grow. The hate he has fostered will continue to fester and the potential for more civil strife will increase. The possibility of actual civil war, and, as a result, the potential for him to create a dictatorship will become more and more real. If Joe Biden wins, though some of Trump’s followers may be violently disappointed, his sincere and honest attempts to bring Americans together to resolve their differences and heal their wounds, his fairness in addressing all Americans’ grievances, and his compassion and empathy for all, will tame the savage beast that has been unleashed by Donald Trump, and thus save our republic. Then all Americans will be able to see that the divisions and conflicts of these times were just another set of challenges that our United States had to meet and overcome, just as we met and overcame the challenges of the past. And we will then be able to continue to move forward to that ‘more perfect union’ that we all want for our children and grandchildren.
So our choice is clear, it’s between the dark side of the human id or the bright side of the human heart.
And on Nov, 3rd, when we Americans vote, we should also remember the motto of our nation: E Pluribus Unum - Out Of Many One.
