It’s Halloween time again, so everyone’s in the mood for a good scare.
Jack-o’-lanterns, old horror film reruns, spooky decorations…we love them all.
One real terror we could definitely live without, however, is the prospect of a Republican victory in the upcoming mid-term elections.
What would it mean if the GOP (Grotesque Oligarch Party) gains control of the House?
Take a look at some of the things they’ve been offering:
· An end to the January 6th Committee and any serious Congressional investigation into Trump’s multi-faceted attempt to overthrow the will of the people.
· Defunding the Justice Department’s ongoing investigation and potential prosecution of Dear Leader Donald. Be it for his treasonous theft of top-secret government documents, his even more treasonous instigation of a multi-pronged insurrection, financial crimes and malfeasance, election fraud or obstruction of justice, the budget will be zero.
· Likely impeachment of President Biden, Vice President Harris, Attorney General Garland and who knows who else for…who knows what? (The substance matters little. Payback for Trump’s legitimate trials and humiliation is the entire point of the exercise.)
· Endless investigations of Hunter Biden.
· A drop off or end of US support for Ukraine and a tacit green light for Putin to redouble his efforts to destroy the country.
· Destruction of everything good that’s been done by the Biden administration to date, including, of course, caps on drug prices, forgiveness of student loans, climate-change mitigation efforts…you name it, it’s gone.
· Introduction of a draconian nationwide ban on abortion.
· Use of the debt ceiling to hold the country hostage to their wacko schemes.
· Significant reductions and/or annual or 5-yearly reviews to Social Security and Medicare…or even an outright end to the programs.
· Marjorie Taylor Greene and other members of the Q-Anon conference being put in positions of real power and given free rein to infect the federal government with their insane conspiracy theories.
Scared yet?
I am.
But wait. It gets worse.
Suppose the Senate falls as well.
· All judicial nominations put on hold until a Republican is back in the White House.
· A rubber stamp on even the looniest legislation coming out of the House as long as Trump likes it.
· Opposition and obstruction to any efforts made by the President to take executive action, no matter how much it might benefit the country.
· All obstacles to Republican voter suppression schemes gone…maybe forever.
· Ted Cruz style gun control (or lack thereof.)
· Doubling down on tax cuts for the rich and corporate deregulation.
· Election denialism given center stage in both houses. Refusal to recognize Biden as our legitimately elected President.
· All oversight to become an entirely partisan means of attack.
· Deliberate use of the power of Congressional power to tank the economy so that Biden and the Democrats can be blamed in the 2024 election cycle.
Not exactly Trick or Treat candy they’re offering.
But most horrifying of all is the fact that all of this might actually come to pass.
In this very election cycle, all those billions of dollars of dark money political ads and investment in an iron-clad disinformation system might at last pay off in full.
November 8, 2022 might be the day American democracy actually fails.
If enough people don’t come to their senses in the face of the GOP propaganda blitz – and get out to vote en mass in spite of all the gerrymandering – like a teenager on Elm Street, this could be a nightmare from which we will never awake.
This Halloween, wearing the mark of the beast proudly on their foreheads in the form of their red MAGA hats, the zombie hordes of Donald the Deceiver are out in force, determined to turn our country to the darkness.
