Brian Kemp Is The BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week for Denouncing "Cancel Culture" While He Has Canceled Hundreds of Thousands of Black Votes
April 5, 2021
Special From BuzzFlash.Com
Republican Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia wanted to show he was livid about Major League Baseball pulling the 2021 All-Star Game out of Atlanta in protest of the state’s enactment of a Draconian voter suppression law. Kemp reverted to the current GOP cultural wars rhetoric against the Democrats:
Major League Baseball caved to fear, political opportunism, and liberal lies, Georgians - and all Americans - should fully understand what the MLB's knee-jerk decision means: cancel culture and woke political activists are coming for every aspect of your life, sports included. If the left doesn’t agree with you, facts and the truth do not matter.
However, Kemp owes his governorship to canceling approximately 700,000 votes due to purging voter rolls between 2016-2018. That was done, according to a lawsuit to which Greg Palast was a party, “using a racially-biased methodology.”
That large-scale “cancelling” of largely voters of color had a devastating impact on Democratic Stacey Abrams’s campaign against Kemp, then serving as Secretary of State. In 2018. Abrams lost the election by just 55,000 votes out of almost 4 million cast.
Many voting rights advocates had demanded Kemp resign from holding the Secretary of State position before the 2018 election, as he was also accused of other voter suppression actions, but he refused. According to Vox, Kemp said, in now familiar GOP disingenuous terms, that “he is working to ensure ‘election integrity,’ and that allegations of voter suppression are a ‘farce.’”
Kemp’s faux outrage about backlash to the 2021 voter suppression bill is the true farce since he won his office through personally overseeing the invalid removal of thousands upon thousands of Black voters from the rolls.
The 2021 “culture wars” language of the GOP used by Kemp is ironic because it is the Republican Party, in Georgia and throughout the nation, which is adept at cancelling the rights of those who disagree with its right-wing populist agenda. Kemp, as a member of the Trump wing of the GOP (his certification of Biden as the winner of the presidential election had to do with legal mandates not any recantation of Trump), has supported cancelling or taking away, among many others:
a right for a woman to choose her reproductive options
a right to be protected from COVID
a right to be protected from gun violence as a result of loose gun laws
a right to be treated as equal as an LGBTQ person, including same-sex marriage
a right to unionize
a right to have non-partisan Congressional districts
a right to pursue policies that mitigate the toxic impact of climate change
a right to a strong public education
a right to protect people of color from excessive police powers
a right to possess and smoke marijuana
a right to learn of the mutli-cultural history of the US in schools
a right to civil rights protections
and, of course, a right to vote for all those who are eligible to vote. (On the federal level there are many more examples of the GOP “cancel culture,” including a goal of cancelling Social Security and other programs that benefit the public good.)
Brian Kemp is very quick to cancel the sacred right of non-whites to vote and to cancel fundamental rights as he incredulously clamors that he is the victim of “liberal” cancellation.
And that's why Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is our GOP Hypocrite of the Week.
Remember our BuzzFlash motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time.
Today marks the return of the “BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week” after 11 years. As BuzzFlash continues to grow, with limited funds, we will just be honoring one Republican a month, but look forward to the time when we have staff to return to publishing this “honor” once a week.
The original “BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week” ran every week from 2003 - 2010. You can find “winners” from those years by clicking here.
