At first it appears a challenge to bestow hypocrite of the week honors on Matt Gaetz, because he is so brazenly a Trump ass-wipe that it takes research to find out what he's actually a hypocrite about. Basically, his motto is "I am an asshole, live with it."

Gaetz is the epitome of the new breed of GOP politician — with Trump as the iconic TV star without any consistent policies except tax cuts for the rich and brutalizing brown-skinned immigrants — who are not into governance. They see their roles as performative demagogues whose brand is determined by their appearances on right-wing “news,” Trump’s approval, and shocking statements and actions that prime the angry maelstrom of emotions among whites with a grievance against a multi-cultural society.

They are entertainers who happen to be elected to their positions, but poking at the inner resentment of their followers is their full-time job (when Gaetz is not having sex with hookers and Marjorie Green is not allegedly having affairs). This raises their profiles politically among rabid followers who want to feel vindicated and in charge of the government and bootstraps their fundraising, but does nothing to improve the quality of life and Constitutional guarantees of the United States.

Gaetz’s Congressional website, paid for by us taxpayers, reads like a paean to Donald Trump. Here’s his section “about” Congress:

Matt Gaetz is one of Trump’s top allies in Washington and has long been an ardent critic of the Mueller Witch Hunt. Matt is not afraid to call out the Fake News Media when they try to tear down the President with baseless attacks. President Trump has called Matt an “Absolute Warrior,” and GQ called him “The Trumpiest Congressman in Trump’s Washington.” When Matt sees corruption and agenda-pushing by the out-of-touch liberal elite, he takes action.

and in his overall “about” page:

During the Russia Hoax and subsequent partisan impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, Matt was a staunch defender of the President and a fierce advocate for his acquittal. Matt spearheaded the charge for transparency during the Democrats’ partisan impeachment depositions by leading over fifty Republican colleagues into their secretive, closed-door impeachment inquiry to observe the proceedings.

Matt has been a tireless defender of President Trump and his vision for the United States. He has earned nicknames such as the “Trumpiest Congressman in Trump’s Washington” by GQ magazine and “the Trumpiest Congressman” by Rolling Stone, which he considers badges of honor.

Gaetz’s only notable legislative activity was when he was the only member of 535 in Congress to vote against a law to rein in “human trafficking,” passed in 2017. The hypocrisy of the current investigations into his alleged involvement in human trafficking certainly rise to the level of a member of the royal family of hypocrites.

He is daily braying against “liberals” who don’t follow the law, when it is pretty clear that he engages in cocaine sex parties, likely engages in illegal activities with seedy companions, and even was a participant in an unlawful pre-insurrection storming of a classified hearing in Congress to grab headlines.

In April, Gaetz, Greene and fellow clown car seditionist, Paul Gosar (R-AZ) , sent out a trial balloon for an “America First caucus. Their manifesto called for an America bound together by “a common respect for uniquely Anglo-Saxon political traditions,” and that “mass immigration” must be halted.

Recently he added to continuing concerns about violent clashes over Trump’s election loss when he said, according to the venerable Heather Cox Richardson:

As if in illustration of the party’s increasingly antidemocratic radicalism, in Georgia last night, Representatives Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) continued to stoke the same Big Lie that drove the insurrectionists, claiming (falsely) that former president Trump won the 2020 election. The two representatives are on a tour of rallies, possibly to distract from the scandals in which they’re embroiled. Last night, Gaetz, who is under federal investigation for sex trafficking, told attendees that the nation’s founders wrote the Second Amendment to enable citizens to rise up against the government. “It’s not about hunting, it’s not about recreation, it’s not about sports,” he said. “The Second Amendment is about maintaining, within the citizenry, the ability to maintain an armed rebellion against the government if that becomes necessary.”

As the audience cheered, Gaetz continued: “I hope it never does, but it sure is important to recognize the founding principles of this nation and to make sure that they are fully understood.”

Matt Gaetz excels in egging on a crowd about armed neo-Confederacy rebellion against the United States Government, and infecting victims of mass psychoses with errant interpretations of the Constitution.

Gaetz right now, like his entertainment mentor Trump, is marinating in widespread rumors that he is on the verge of being indicted. On April 6, he issued a news release that simply said that the woman of his office supported him, but with not one actual name affirming their faith in him. Women are just toys to Gaetz, to be used for personal pleasure and humiliation.

Gaetz has nothing to offer the legislative branch but meretricious sophomoric narcissism and an ego-driven belief that he and Greene are going to take charge of the Republican Party. This is a guy who just publicly announced that the money he and his fiance paid for a yacht had “gone missing.” You can be sure that is going to show up as a questionable expenditure in the FBI investigation. Otherwise, Mr. Beavis/Butthead would not have announced it to the world.

Like all card-carrying Republican hypocrites, in the end, Gaetz can’t resist playing a victim, even as he touts his Trump-approved loony leadership.

And those are just some of the reasons Matt Gaetz is the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the week.

So many Republicans, so little time.
