Texas Democratic Party and Stacey Abrams Launch Huge Voter Registration Campaign

In August 2019, Stacey Abrams launched the Fair Fight 2020 campaign, a major voter protection initiative. ABC News is reporting that Abrams’ group is teaming up with Texas Democrats in a huge campaign to build off of the blue wave successes across the country and in the state in 2018.
The basic initiative will aim to register a truly ambitious number of new voters across the Lone Star state, while also working to protect the existing voting rights of others who are threatened by the GOP’s anti-democracy voter suppression attacks. Texas Democrats recently filed a federal lawsuit against Texas saying that Texas Secretary of State Ruth Hughs’ ridiculous invalidation of 2,400 voter registration applications just days before the 2018 deadline violated their First and 14th Amendment rights.
Political science professor Cal Jillson told ABC that the GOP is freaking out and pressing harder suppression tactics because, like everywhere else in the country, the "declining Anglo-population is Republican and the rising minority population is Democrats, so that long term shift is endangering the traditional Republican majority.”
Beto O’Rourke’s Senate campaign’s success in motivating record numbers of Democratic voters to come out in Texas in 2018 has helped many to change their thinking about what is and what is not possible. What had once seemed a pipe dream is now more and more attainablem and watching the Democratic Party’s machine getting behind the kind of voting initiatives that a healthy democracy needs is a welcome bit of progress.
